MAN SHOT DEAD

SYDNEY, October 19On Saturday night George Inman, a railway platelayer, aged 33, was shot dead in a residential in Dowling Street, city, during a quarrel in which he, his wife, and another man were involved. Yesterday morning detectives arrested a naval rating on board the cruiser CanberraInman had been living apart from his wife tor about ten months. It was stafed that their married life had not been happy, and had been marred by frequent quarrels. Mrs Inman, who is the mother of five children, went to live in a residential in Dowling Street, opposite Moore Park, after separating from her husband. Inman, it was alleged, struck his little daughter during Saturday afternoon, after,he had endeavoured to find out from her where her mother lived.

A little later Inman arrived at the residential and tried to gain admission. He was refused, and about 9 o’clock he came back. It is alleged that he was drunk. By some means he gained an entrance to the house, and a few minutes later hammered furiously at the door of Mrs Inman’s room.

When the door was not opened, he threw his weight against it and burst it Mrs Inman and another man were in the room. A violent quarrel took place. It is alleged that Inman struck his wife, a tight ensued between Inman and his wife’s visitor, and-the man drew a revolver from his pocket, Inman being shot in the headHe died within a few minutes. The man fled from the house. A call was sent through to the Detective Office, but Inman had died before the detectives arrived. The body was taken by the ambulance to Sydney Hospital, and later to the Morgue. Detectives Immediately organised a search. The wireless patrol was notified- Detective-Sergeants Miller, Kennedy, and James continued their inquiries all through Saturday night, and finally visited H.M.S. Cnberra, which is lying at Garden Island. They arrested Joseph Perry, 23, a naval stoker,Who is also tyiown as William Joseph Lloyd- They brought him to the Central Police Station and preferred a charge of murder against him- The detectives state that Perry made a.statement regrding the quarrel and the shooting. Mrs Inman told the,police that during her married life she had been frequently, beaten by her husband. She had lost an arm, she said, as a result of injuries he had inflicted on her.
