The threat of settlers at Ward, to take steps to prevent the removal of rails at the northern end of the South Island main trunk line, has been abandoned. The settlers’ original intention was communicated to the Minister of Public Works by the Member for Wairau (Mr Healy), and Mr Coates has replied as follows: — “Your telegram received. Rails in stock on the job can surely be used for current work elsewhere. My remarks must be interpreted in the light of reason. The rails laid will not be removed, but stock rails can be and will be used when required on any job. In view of the foregoing in. structions cannot be given as required.” On receipt of this explanation Mr Healy got in touch by telephone with the Ward settlers, who had been awaiting the Minister’s telegram, and they decided that the explanation was satisfactory and no further action was necessary.
