[PXB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] GIRL DROWNED. ASHBURTON, October 30. Eleanor Patterson, 14, daughter ot a widow, was drowned in the Ashburton River while paddling yesterday afternoon. The body was recovered this morning. SEAMAN WITH OPIUM. AUCKLAND, October 30. James Shorten, 32, seaman, was found drunk on the wharf, last night.( When searched at the police station an eight ounce tin of opium was found. Shortell was fined £25, to-day. WIDOW ROBBED. AUCKLAND, October 30. Archie Victor Rudge was sentenced to-day to six months’ imprisonment, to be followed by eighteen months ieformative detention, Magistrate Hunt repeating that accused was a. heartless rogue who only had pluck enough to steal from a woman. MOTORIST KILLED. BLENHEIM, October 30. _ Thomas John Pearson, of Hataitai, Wellington, insurance inspector for the Sun Office, was killed, early this rnoilling, when the motor-car he was driving collided with an electric power pole in Blenheim. Pearson was killed instantaneously. Myrtle Jean Barrett received a broken collarbone, other minor injuries, and shock. Daniel M. O’Sullivan received head injuries and shock. Both were admitted to hospital. CONCERT PARTY’S ESCAPE. TE AWAMUTU, October 30. A sensational motor accident occurred last night. A concert party of five was proceeding to Pukeatua, in a Sedan car owned by C. F. Battson, When the vehicle failed to negotiate a bend, and rolled to the bottom of at gully, about fifty feet. The vehicle was badly damaged, but the party had a miraculous escape, all, though bruised and shaken, being able to proceed to take part in the concert. “CHARITY” STAMPS. WELLINGTON, October 29. The Postmaster-General, the Hon. A. Hamilton, announced that “charity” stamps will be placed on sale at all post offices on Saturday in continuation of the anti-tuberculosis campaign commenced in the Dominion at the end of 1929. Two denominations will be available, 3d and 2d. In each case Id will be devoted to the fund, out of which children’s health camps are being established. The Postmaster-General stated that there is urgent need for united action to prevent the spread of tuberculosis amongst children. WELLINGTON COMMISSION. WELLINGTON, October 30 The personnel of the Commission to inquire into the administration of Wellington City will be: H. E. Morton, of Melbourne, engineer, and H. D. Vickery, of Wellington, account ant. The Commission is given power to co-opt another expert if necessary. The cost of the commission is estimated at £1,500. The Commission will inquire into every branch of the Council’s activities in all departments and report to the Council on possible economies, consistent with efficiency. The Town Clerk, Mr E. P. Norman, is secretary of the Commission.
