AUSTRALIAN SEAMEN

t MODERATES V. REDS. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] SYDNEY, October 28. The seamen’s union meeting, held to decide the fate of the strike, was again a fiasco to-day. The moderates sought to rescind all of the strike resolutions which proposal, if carried, would mean the resumption of work. The “Reds” attacked the proposal. All of the speeches were greeted with continuous hooting and shouting and the bitterest exchanges of threats. The “Reds” finally made a concerted rush towards the chairman, Mr. Daly, who, being thus unable to restore order, declared the meeting closed. Fighting and jostling prevailed fox- many minutes. The moderate seamen, it is stated, are determined to man the ships. At least one thousand names have been obtained of those who desire the discontinuance of the dispute. Theii- petition was presented at to-day’s meeting, but the “Reds” compelled the chairman to reject it. Another such petition iis being prepared. ■ The shipowners are marking time.

They declare their patience is nearly exhausted, axid they hint that if the trouble is not settled this week, a call for volunteers is certain next week.
