GREYMOUTH BOWLING CLUB

PLEASANT OPENING DAY. There was an attendance of over forty members, and a large number of ladies, at the opening of the 1931-32 season of the Greymouth Bowling Club, at the Club’s pavilion yesterday afternoon. Pleasant weather conditions prevailed, and the green, although playing slowly, was in good order, considering the severe attacks made upon it by the grass grub. The President, Mr D. McKay, in expressing a bowler’s pleasure at the arrival of another season, and extending a welcome to all present, stated that a great difficulty had to be met in dealing with the grass grub, but this had now been almost overcome. While there remained a few patches which required protection for a part of the season, he was confident that by the end of December, the green would be again in excellent condition. The Committee had found a successful method of treatment in dealing with the grub. The President referred to an article which had appeared in the . “Star’’ some weeks back, dealing with the formation of the Club. The article had been of interest to bowling men, but it. had been stated that this year marked the twenty-fifth season of the Club’s operations. That was not. .correct, but the error could be accounted for by the fact that the green, was opened in March, 1906, which left little time for play the first season. Actually, last season was the Club’s silver jubilee, but it had gone unnoticed. The Club was registered in 1904, and the green built in 1905-06. The second opening took place in November, 1906- The first inter-club match was played on March 18, 1906, between Westport and Greymouth, there being three rinks a-side. Of the twelve men in the Greyinouth rinks, three of them, Messrs T Jones, J. Ring, and J. Cairney were still members of the Club, and Messrs Jones and Ring would be playing that afternoon. He referred to the loss sustained by the Club in the death of Mr T. S. Brebner, who had been one of the few members to hold the office of President for two successive years. The late Mr Brebner had been a keen worker for the Club, and n enthusiastic bowler, whose loss the Club greatly regretted. Another sound bowler and member in Mr William Graham, had been transferred to Hastings. The President then called on Mrs E. Moss to roll up the first kitty, and Mrs D. McKay to send up the first bowl, after which the season was declared open. A letter was received from the Runanga Club wishing the Greymouth Club a successful season, and an apology for absence was received from Captain Iles. Telegrams wishing the Club success were also received from Detective Young, Christchurch, and Mr W. Graham, Hastings. Teams chosen by the President and Vice-President, then met in a match, the Vice-President’s rinks winning by 85 to 76. The scores were as follow, Vice-PresidenC’s rinks being given first: —

Leitch, Smith, Sharp. Moss (s) 26 v. Stevenson, Ring, Davis, Fletcher (s) 22. Chalk, Holt, Steele, Mercer (s) 23 v. Haglund, Ross, Wilson, Whibley (s) 14. Brislane, T- Scott, W. Scott, J. Steer (s) 23 v. Angus, Pearson, Kilgour Spong (s) 15. W. Kyle, Beresford, Jones, Holmes (s) 13 v. Tate, Lawn, Crooks, Truscott (s) 25. BULLER CENTRE APPROVED. The following letter was received by Mr z D. H. Wilmot, secretary of Westport Bowling Club, from W. G. Bran, Secretary to the New Zealand Bowling Association: — “Re application to form new centre: I have pleasure in advising that the Executive of the Council have decided to grant your application to form a new centre on the West Coast, provided that the conditions applying to the formation of such centre are carried out and approved of by the Executive. Such conditions to cover copy of proposed rules, full list of names of officials and a list of the various clubs to be affiliated to the new centre. Our decision to grant your application has been reached by the support of various members of the Council. The application will be finally approved at the meeting of the Council to be held in January next, but if you comply with the necessary conditions the application will be granted, and this will enable you to proceed, with your year’s business. I further beg to acknowledge yours of the 9th inst., notifying us that a new club, to be known as the Waimangaroa Bowling Club, has been formed, and I note that this club has adopted the Westport Club rules, with slight alterations. This is not quite sufficient, and I think you should supply me with a copy of the Westport Club rules, showing the alterations to be made by the new club. —Wishing the ne’w Centre every success.”
