An indication that the Government is inclined to view favourably the helping of New Zealand traders who are hard hit through the adverse exchange rate, as well as by the high duties imposed on foreign imports, was given by the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Customs, in the House yesterday. There was an increase of thiee cases of infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury Health District for the week ended noon on Monday, as compared with the previous week. No cases were reported from the West Coast district. The total of qases in the Canterbury district was 29. Mr F. A definite hint that the government intends to proceed with the Broadcasting Bill was made in the House yesterday by the Prime Minister, who said the measure was being drafted, and was not quite ready to be proceeded with. Business at the refreshment service at the new Auckland railway station, which was discontinued a week ago by order of the Railways Board, has been resumed. Several members of the formei* staff were reengaged last Friday, and a start was made with putting the tearoom in order for business. This room has not been in use for some lime past, meals and light refreshments alike being served in the dining-room, which will not be opened under the new arrang-.--ment. The basement refreshment room, which is patronised by the staff as well as the public, resumed business last Monday.

A Westport prospector showed a “Times” reporter a nugget of gold which he picked up in the Mokihinui River. The nugget weighed well over an ounce and contained a small quantity of quartz. It was waterworn, and was lying on top of the gravel la the riverbed, having apparently been recently brought down from the higher reaches of the river in a flood.

Women students at the Auckland University College, in the habit, of smoking, will in future, have to console themselves at home, or keep their cigarettes in cases while in the University building. The usual lively proceedings at meetings of the Takapuna Borough Council, took a dramatic turn last evening, when a passage of arms between the Mayor (J. Guiniven) and a member (L. H. Titchener) culminated in the Mayor summoning a policeman. The action was taken through Titchener refusing to sit down when requested. The policeman arrived, but was informed by the Town Clerk that his services were not required, and a peaceful settlement was effected.— “Star" Special Service. Two motor-cars came into collision at the corner of Papanui Road and Bealey Avenue (Christchurch) at 12.45 p.m. yesterday. Mrs. C. H. Orchard was driving along Papanui Road towards the city when a sedan car driven by Mr. J. M. Bunt, of Greymouth, coming out from Carlton Mill Road, struck her car, spun it completely round, and toppled it over on its left side. Mrs. Orchard was unhurt but was jammed in the car and had to be assisted out by means of a step-ladder placed through the door. The car was only slightly damaged, the windscreen being splintered and the spokes of the rear left wheel completely shattered. The left mudguard of Mr. Bunt’s car was badly dented, and the bumper-bar bent and twisted.
