CLEARED BY FINGERPRINTS

POLICE OFFICER’S MISTAKE. A woman who gave evidence in a case at the Old Bailey, London, lately against a police constable whom she alleged assaulted her, emphatically denied that she was charged with a man at Willesden four years ago with stealing a ring, and to prove that her statement was true she consented to have her fingerprints taken. This was done by an officer from Scotland Yard, and it was shown that she was not the woman who was charged at Willesden. Quite clearly, said counsel, a police officer had made a mistake, and a genuine mistake. “He, and I reservedly withdraw the suggestion,” he added. Judge Gregory: It only shows how mistakes may happen. Had it not been for the woman’s fingerprints being taken, she might have gone away under the grave odium of having been convicted.
