HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUJI OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, October 10. Yesterday afternoon, a representative gathering of citizens entertained Dr. Hayes at afternoon tea. The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry) presided and in referring to the Doctor’s departure from Hokitika, said it was generally regretted, but pleasure was felt that it meant promotion. Apart from the fact that Dr. Hayes has been a most exemplary Superintendent at the Mental Hospital, he has proved a good citizen, and as a small token of esteem held by his many friends, presented him with a gold mounted fountain pen. Messrs W. J. Butler, H. M. Coulson, Drs. Teichelmaun and Wilson, also spoke in felicitous terms. Dr. Hayes briefly thanked all for the kind sentiments expressed and for the friendship extended to him and Mrs. Hayes during their stay. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; present: The Mayoi" (Mr. G. A. Perry), Mrs. E. W. Heenan, T. W. Duff, J. King, E. Teichelmann, D. P. Stuart, A. R. Elcock. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. D. J. Evans, A. C. Armstrong and G. Heinz.

A letter was received from Cr. D. J. Evans resigning his position as chairman of the P.W. Committee and applying for three months’ leave of absence from the Council.—Leave granted. Cr. James King was elected to the position of chairman of the P.D. committee. Regarding repair of ' fire brigade wells, Crs. King and Duff were appointed to confer with the Fire Brigade representatives (Concerning supplies of water.

The abattoirs manager reported animals slaughtered during September: — 13 cows, 8 heifers, 70 bullocks, 273 sheep, 4 pigs, 4 calves, 1 cow condemned. Receipts for month £56/17/6 compared to £67/15/6 for same period last year. The Treasurer reported receipts £498/3/3; expenditure £Bl9/4/8. Cr. Balance £378/9/9. Accounts amounting to £998/19/10 were approved and passed for payment.
