HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

HOKITIKA, September 12. The Hokitika Borough Council met

last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. E. W. Heenan, T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, Jas. King, G. Heinz, D. P. Stuart. Apologies for absence were made ffor Crs. Evans, Teichelinann and Armstrong. The Mapor referred to the passing of Mr. Jas. Park, who for years was Borough Solicitor. He spoke of the high esteem in which deceased was held and moved a vote of condolence with the widow and members 'of the family.—Carried in the usual manner.

The Town Clerk, Ross, wrote, intimating that the Ross Borough Council have by resolution, agreed to accept the present allocation of Heavy Traffic Fees, viz., 121 per cent, of the Westland Group, as fair and reasonable. S. A. Clarke, Hokitika, wrote, protesting against the employment on Borough painting work of men working under No. 5 scheme. Mrs. Louisa Rowe, Hokitika, wrote asking that a dray road be formed in Hoffman St., to give access to Section 1291. —Referred to the Public Works Committee to report. Wm. Connor, Slaughterman, wrote asking for fourteen days’ annual leave from the sth to the 18th October next. —Referred to Abattoir Committee to arrange.

The hon. secretary, Hokitika Lawn Tennis Club, wrote asking whether their Club can obtain a long lease of four sections of Whitcombe Square, for the purpose of Tennis Courts, or alternatively, an area of one acre of the Botanical Gardens for the same purpose, and also the annual rental and conditions in each instance. —Referred to the Reserves Committee to report.

Thos. Cagney, and other petitioners asked that the open drain along the eastern side’of Brittan Street, between Hampden and Stafford Streets, he piped and filled in.—Petitioners to be informed that if they provide 18” pipes the Council will provide the labour. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Wellington, forwarded a copy of a statement recently made to the Press respecting fire waste in the Dominion, and as the Government had given the lead in the matter, he requested Local Authorities to co-op-erate with Brigade Authorities in inaugurating a “Fire Prevention” drive. The Inspector, Fire Brigades, Wellington, intimated that it is proposed to organise a fire prevention and

cleaning-up week in every town in New Zealand, in the early part of the coming summer, and asking whether the Council is prepared to support the proposal and that if so, whether the week beginning November 23 next, would We suitable. —The Council agreed to do all in its power in the direction indicated. The Treasurer reported receipts £2,154/5/8; payments £1,148/3/11; Cr. £9OB/0/11. Accounts amounting to £B9O were passed for payment. In the foreman’s report, it was stated that the average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 10ft. 2in.

The Abattoirs Manager reported stock slaughtered: 14 cows, 15 heifers, 49 bullocks, 232 sheep, 1 lamb, 20 pigs, 13 calves. Condemned: 1 sheep and 1 pig! Fees received £53/ 11/C for same period last year £57/ 14/-. The Town Clerk reported on the conference held at Greymouth re division of heavy traffic fees and the report was adopted.
