HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, August 15. Mr. D. P. Stuart, manager of the Hokitika-Kanieri Sawmills Ltd., met with a painful accident while at work in the mill yesterday afternoon, by a plank springing up and striking him on the forehead inflicting a gash. Surgical aid was sought and the wound stitched. The annual Hospital Ball held m the Soldiers’ Hall on Thursday night and the Juvenile Ball last night, were both successful. The large hall was uncomfortably filled on Thursday night. Mrs. W. Wilson was awarded first prize for fancy costume (“Early Victorian”) for ladies, and Mr. R. Anderson ( A Viking”) for the gentlemen. Dr. and Mrs. Hayes and Dr. and Mrs. Wilson were the judges. The death of Mr. Thomas Condon at his residence, Bealey Street, on Thursday night, removes one of the earliest settlers ot South Westland Deceased who was a native of Limerick, eland and 90 years of age, first came to N.Z. in 1868, working in Otago. He came around to the Coast at the Five Mile in the Alhambra and took up his section at Mahitahi, where for forty yeai s he worked as a settler and his home was noted for its hospitality. He retired about 14 years ago, coming to Hokitika. He leaves three, daughters (Mrs G. Diedrichs, of Hokitika; Mrs. M Patrick of Tetalio and Miss J. Condon, Hokitika), and two sons (M . John Condon of Mahitahi and Mr. Thomas Condon, of Tatare; also a sister in Ireland. HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Hokitika Borough CouncH met last evening. Present The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), and Crs_ E. W Keenan, A. C. Armstrong, Jas. King, G. Heinz, Dr Teichelmann. Anologies for absence were received from c” Evans. Elcock, Duff, and St Mrs' A. E. Hackell. Livingstone Street, wrote regarding street spoil being deposited on her section. Mr C. Neville, Hall Street, wrote asking that hole in street at his frontage be filled in. Mr H. W. G. Park, Fitzherbeit Street, wrote asking that drain at his frontage be cleaned to prevent stagnant water lying there. Mr William Milligan, Hampden Street, wrote asking for water service connection to Section 1269.—T0 pay costs. • . Mr A. E. King, Brittan Street, wrote asking for roading, drainage, and water service connection facilities to Sections 1299 and 1300, Park Street. Borough finances will not permit expense. , , The Hokitika Fire Board forwarded a resolution asking the Council to extend the water main in Upper Sewell Street by a distance of 10 chains with 4-inch pipes and plugs to suit. Resolved that a report be procured as to the cost and utilising old pipes for the work. . . The Secretary of the Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote, pointing out the urgent necessity of extending the water service in Park Street for fire purposes, and stressing the difficulty experienced in there being only one fire plug availble in dealing with a fire at Mr Staines’ residence. —The Borough finances prevent the Council undertaking this work. Mrs E. E. Orr, Fitzherbert Street, asked for formation of footpath along her frontage. —No action taken. Mrs S. Michel wrote asking for a 21 years’ lease of Municipal Reserve 496, Borough of Hokitika. —Granted. Mrs M. Rugg asked for permission to transfer her portion of Municipal Reserve 492 to Mr H. Parker—Referred to the Town Clerk for subdivision of land. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £lBOl, accounts £i±4b 3/11, payments £770/17/-, debit £175 18/-. Accounts amounting to the sum of £175/18/- were passed for payment. The Overseer reported on work done during the month. The average depth of water in the reservoir was 9ft. om. r lhe Abattoirs Manager reported animals slaughtered during the month —24 cows, 27 heifers, 45 bullocks, 386 sheep, 28 lambs, 10 pigs, 13 calves; condemned 2 bullocks, 2 sheep, 2 pigs. Fees received £7l/15/6; same month last year £64/8/-. The question of deepening Brittan Street drain was left over for a full report. The Health Inspector wrote notifying a case of diphtheria and asking that a water channel be formed on the west side of Revell Street from Mr Detlaff’s residentce to Park Street. —To be attended to. Mr L. Gooch applied for permission to instal another petrol pump at his shop in Stafford Street. —Granted on the usual conditions, the pump to be constructed so that cars will not obstruct the footpath.

All the stores are offering amazing values in luncheons and dinners, but particularly in luncheons, for stores generally are closed after dark. Excellent meals are served for 9d or lOd, says the Sydney correspondent of the Melbourne Argus. The more pretentious efforts in which poultry figures are especially notable. It is asked in some quarters how it is possible to do it. At an Oxford street store part of the menu consists of roast duck or turkey, with baked potatoes and other vegetables, roll and butter, and tea or coffee, for 1/3. At a Broadway (Glebe) store something similar is on offer. There are also surprising fish luncheons at trifling cost. These opportunities are freely advertised. A large store in the centre of the city has a. cafeteria in which many business men may be seen collecting a meal of excellent quality and variety to cost well under 1/-. At another store in the cityproper a luncheon is served under the best conditions for 10d., and there are several others among the large establishments equally noteworthy.
