STEWARD DROWNED.

DUNEDIN, May 10. The body of Peter McGrattan, aged 49, a steward on the cable ship, Iris, was found floating in the sea near the cable wharf at Devonport last evening. It is believed that McGrattan fell from the jetty.

BOARDINGHOUSE ABLAZE. DUNEDIN, May 9.

A seaside boarding house of thirty rooms, at Brighton, owned by Mrs. Nicholson, was destroyed by fire. It was a wooden building, 50 years old. A large proportion of the contents were lost. It was destroyed in half an hour. The building was insured for £llOO and the contents for £5OO.

FOOTBALLER INJURED. CHRISTCHURCH, May 10

During the course o£ the senior B Rugby match, North Canterbury v. Training College at Rangiora yesterday afternoon, L. Butters, a Training College player, collided with a goal post and received concussion of the brain. He was unconscious for a time, but later recovered.

HAIR IN MACHINERY. CHRISTCHURCH, May 10.

As a result of catching her hair in a revolving shaft at the factory of Lane, Walker and Rudkin, Sydenham, where she is an employee, Eva Morris, aged 16, received severe scalp wounds and head injuries yesterday morning. The injured girl, who lives at 222, Antigua Street, was admitted to the Public Hospital. Her. condition is said to be fairly serious.

FURRIERS ROBBED. DUNEDIN, May 11.

Another furriers’ establishment was raided by burglars on Saturday night, about £soo'worth of stock being removed from the Hudson Fur Company, George Street. * The thieves had little difficulty in removing the glass from the fresfy putty setting of a newly fitted window, then they bent back the half-inch iron bars to allow of entry. Fifteen fur coats and a number of evening frocks were removed.

CAR’S FATAL SKID

PALMERSTON NORTH, May 11.

An accident which occurred at the intersection of the Rangitikei line and the Bunnythorpe-Kairanga road, at eight forty-five last evening when a car overturned after skidding in loose metal, resulted in the death of Harold Bennett aged twelve. The car was driven by deceased’s brother, who was uninjured. The other occupants escaped with slight injuries. /'

SEQUEL TO TRUCK FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH, May 9.

Arthur Lancelot Cyril Watkins, a dealer, residing at Rangiora, aged 35 years, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, that about April 19, at New Brighton, he wilfully damaged a motor truck, the property of Johnson’s North Canterbury Motors, Ltd., thereby committing mischief. Chief-Detective Carroll said that Watkins was driving a truck near New Brighton, when he had an accident. It was alleged that he later set fire to the truck to secure the insurance money. The truck was held by his mother under a hire-purchase agreement. The accused was remanded to appear on May 14.
