ATTACK ON MONARCHISTS WORSE TO FOLLOW ? [BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. COPYBIGHT.] (Recd. May’ 11, 1 p.m.) MADRID, May 10. Anti-monarchist rioting, to-day, culminating in an attempt to storm a newspaper office, defended by powerful hydrants and a machine-gun; also an attempt to raid the monarchist headquarters, compelled the Civil Guard to fire on the crowd, causing* numerous casualties. Popular resentment at the openness of the Monarchist propaganda rose to fevei- heat, owing to a meeting outside the Royalist headquarters, where, 200 volunteers with 100 motor cars, were electioneering. A volunteer led an attack believed to be fatal on a chaffeur, who cheered the republic. The crowd attacked the building, fired four motor cars, and repelled the fire brigade. The police arrested many, but the rioters stormed the Black Maria, and released the prisoners. They punctured the tyres of another police van, and severely beat two monarchists. \

The demonstrators . attacked the A.B.C. newspaper offices, and tried to ignite the premises with the aid of petrol. The civil guards opened fire, and with a squadron of troops quelled the excitement. It was feared the suburban workers would join in the rioting. However, a section departed to stone the barracks of the Civil Guard to which the whole of Spain is hostile. Another section set fire to kiosks belonging to the newspaper “El Debate.” Throngs prevented the trams working throughout the night. Apprehension is felt regarding tomorrow, when a huge demonstration is being held against the monarchist for allegedly killing the chaffeur. BATTLESHIP CREW’S GRIEVANCE MADRID, May 9. The entire crew of the Spanish battleship, “Jaime the First,” marched to the Town Hall of Ferrol and complained of the food and of the high-handedness of the second officer. The Mayor telegraphed to Madrid for instructions.^-Thereupon the crew were arrested en bloc, and . were charged with mutiny. CLAIMANT TO THRONE: - PARIS, May 1. A legitimist bomb has been thrown at the Spanish Republican Government by a manifesto, in which Don Jaime, the Spanish Pretender, son of the famous Don Carlos, leader of the Carlist intrigues as the end of the last century, declares that the Legitimists can henceforward be the only Monarchist party. ■ He urges the Monarchists to rally to combat Communism, and adds that the forthcoming elections will constitute a plebiscite, enabling Spain to choose between a republic and a monarchy on new Federal lines. \ “It is unjust,” says the manifesto, “that monarchism should end because a king failed who did not know how to win the people’s love. I will lead all patriots. I am ready to shed blood in fighting Communism.”
