DISORDER IN GAOL

PRISONERS WRECK MACHINES

ADELAIDE, April 29. Disturbances at the Yatala labour prison on Saturday and to-day have oeen reported to the Comptroller of Prisons (Mr. H. E. Whittle). This moi ning prisoners wrecked five sewing machines, in the tailoring shop. They were promptly locked in their cells.

rhe cause of the trouble was the refusal by the authorities tio permit games to be played in the prison yard on the morning of Anzac Day. The regulations allow games only in the afternoons. The prisoners concerned have requested permission to interview the Chief Secretary (Mr. Whitford).

Guard Noroock, .who told the prisoners that the request to be allowed to play could not be granted owing to the regulations, was counted out, and when Superintendent Becker arrived on the scene and explained why play was not allowed he was hooted.

Several prisoners, who were charged with committing breaches of the regulations, were brought before the visiting magistrate and ordered punishment.

It is understood that the disturbance to-day was in the form of a protest against the punishment.
