CHURCH SUPPORTS MONARCHY. (Received May 8, 10 a.m.) MADRID, May 7. Obviously a reply to the Government’s freedom of religion decree, Cardinal Sergua, Primate of Spain, has dramatically intervened in the elections, issuing a pastoral paying tribute to Alfonso's devotion to the Church. “You may dissent concerning the .form of government on matters of purely human interest, but when the rights of religion are imperilled, it is most essential that Catholics must unite to ensure the election of those pledged to defend the rights of the Church and social order.” The Foreign Minister (Senor Merroux) characterises this as direct advice to the people to support. Monarchists and Catholics.
