PORT HOBART’S MISHAP

THE CAPTAIN CRITICISED [FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, May 8. Expressing the opinion that the Master was not justified in continuing the course at full speed, in the last sixteen minutes, prior. to the mishap, the Nautical Court, which inquired into the mishap to the Port Hobart, off Turakirae Head, on April 4, ordered the Master, Captain Cottell, to pay twenty- guineas towards the’ cost of the inquiry. '' ; The court recognised that the storm of which the Master was not aware had promoted a set which probably contributed to putting the ship off the course, which as laid down was, in the court’s opinion, safe, but when the Master got a glimpse of two and a half points of the starboard bow, of what he believed to be Turakirae, but which was too indistinct to get a bear ing, thereafter could not set land, his prudent course would have been to give the point a wider berth. The court did not think he was justified in continuing at • full speed on the course he was pursuing.
