DOUGLAS PEAK

ENGLISH WOMAN’S CLIMB.

WAIHO GORGE, May 7.

Miss K. Gardiner, L.A.C. (England), with Frank Atack and T. Sherran, Franz Josef Glacier guides, were successful in making the ascent of the Glacier Peak (10,100 ft and Douglas Peak (10,300 ft on April 27 arid 28, the ascent being made from the new hut on the Chancellor ridge. The route followed was across the Fox Glacier neve and up the west snow face of the glacier peak, and from there along the main divide and the north-west arrete to the summit of Douglas Peak. This is only the second time that Douglas Peak has been ascended, and Miss Gardiner is the first woman to reach the summit. The first ascent of these two mountains was made by Dr E. Teichelmann, Rev. H. E. Newton, and Alex. Graham, from a bivouac on Pioneer Ridge, at the head of the Fox Glacier, in February, 1907.
