SHIPPING NOTES.

The Kartigi sailed this morning for Auckland and Napier, via Westport. The Kaimai is due tp-morrow from Westport to load coal for New Plymouth and Wellington.

The Rata left Wellington yesterday for Nelson, Westport and Greymouth with general cargo. After discharge the vessel loads coal for Nelson.

The Kaponga is due on Saturday from Westport to load coal for Miramar and Wellington, thence Auckland via Picton.

Captain T. A. G. Atwopd, superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Auckland, will probably retire on superannuation witjhn the .next few\ months. Captain Atwood hap held, hfs present ppsition for over nine years, and has been in the Government service for nearly 30 years.

PORT HOBART’S hiISHAP'. May 5,:-; The action of the Government in cutting out as an economy measure the broadcasting of weatbier reports to shipping was criticised in the Course of the Port Hobart Magisterial inquiry to : day by Mr G. G. Watson, who appeared for the owners of the ship. He. said that on two days prior to the accident one of the wprst northerliep ■qver experienced raged in.,the vicinity of Cook Slrait, but nowhere else, and the master, in .coming down the. coast, did not know this. Had he known he might .well have reasonably expected abnormal tides, but he had been deprived. of an important aid to navigation by the Government’s suspenesion of the broadcast. The Court decided to return the chief officer’s certificate. The inquiry is proceeding. A . WELLINGTON, May 6. While reserving decision at the Port Hobart inquiry, Mr E. Page, S;M., President of the Court, announced that the Court would not come to a conclusion which would in any way affect the master’s certificate, so far as suspension or cancellation was concerned. His certificate as well as that of the chief officer, was returned, and the Port Hobart left for Lyttelton last evening.

MONOWAI DELAYED. WELLINGTON, May 5. The departure of, the MofiOwai for Sydney was postponed till 8 p.m,. today, owing to a dispute over manning. Negotiations are proceeding.
