Accommodation for assitant teachers. —The matter of erecting living quarters for the assistant teachers was again placed before the Board, on the recommendation of Mr Cowles (head inspector), but owing to the financial stringency the application was held in abeyance. Application was made to the Board for a special grant for incidental expenses. This was favourably considered and the sum of £lO voted for the purpose. Early in the year Miss Revell Was appointed as dental nurse, proving a capable operator. During the year a special exit door was placed in the main corridor, to be used as an emergency, in case of fire or earthquake. An additional water tank was also installed. The building generally is in fair order, due in no small measure to the manner in which the caretaker has executed her duties. The annual school concert and prize distribution were held with the usual success, although not so financially, showing a slight debit of 4/-. This would be accounted for by making an extra presentation to full attendance pupils. Proficiency passes this year were very disappointing, only one gaining a full pass out of four presented. The committee, after a good deal of discussion as to the general depression, local benefits and short pays, were reluctantly compelled to forego the annual picnic. The committee wish to thank the teaching staff for the excellent manner in which they have carried out their duties during the year, and also to state that the most cordial relationship has at all times existed between them. The committee wish to thank the following gentlemen for donating prizes for competition:—Messrs Staples, Stephens and Jones, also the Bachelors’ Ball Committee for the sum of £3 towards the picnic fund. At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mr W. Hall was elected chairman and Mr J 4 A. McEwin secretary and treasurer.
