THE DIVING SEXES

MIXED CONTESTS BANNED.

SCARBOROUGH, March 14,

There was animated discussion at the annual conference of the Amateur Swimming Association, presided over by Mr. H. Crapper, of Sheffield, at Scarborough to-day ,as to whether or not [the ruling of the Council that mixed diving competitions would be contrary to the spirit of the Amateur Swimming Association law, which seeks to prohibit competition on level terms between the sexes, should be confirmed. Mr. J. M. Newton, Leicester, saiid the law of 1911 did forbid all contests between the sexes on level terms, but tho Council had since allowed almost any mixed contest. Even if there wast in tho dark ages an intention of discouraging such contests, surely they had outgrown that, as they had made progress in the matter of costumes.

“Is this diving competition,” he asked, “the only one where women are likely to win, or the men funk it, or were afraid that the women will weep if beaten?”

The conference, however, confirmed the Council’s ruling that mixed contests be forbidden.
