HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] s HOKITIKA, February 28. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Dr. Teichelmann, A. G. Armstrong, E. W. Heenan, G. Heinz, D. J. Evans, T. W. Duff, Jas King, A. R. Elcock.' A deputation consisting of ratepayers living in the vicinity of Sewell Street north waited upon the Council respecting the flooding 'of the sections in that part of the town. Messrs W. Robinson, E. C. Toohey and J. Camerson acted as spokesmen for the deputation (about a dozen ratepayers). A complaint was made that the Council had put in pipes too small when laying the drain, and asking that something be done to remedy the matter. One speaker said he was not going to pay any rates till the matter was rectified.

The Mayor said the Council knew’ the position, but was handicapped by lack of ■ finance. He thanked* the deputation for laying their complaint before the Council and promised it would receive serious consideration. It was resolved to ask Mr J. C. Macfarlane, surveyor, to consult" the Borough overseer in an effort to combat the nuisance complained about. Miss M. S. Andrewes, application for additional leave. —Granted.

The Secretary, Hokitika Cycling Club asking that condition of cyclingtrack in Cass Square be improved.— Referred to P.W. Committee to look into.

Mr W. Robinson, Dee’s Grocery, claim for £l/15/- for damage to five bags of salt through premises being flooded. —Referred back for further information.

Under-Secretary,. Department pf Internal Affairs, Wellington, asking Council to elect under Section 23 of Fire Brigades Act 1926, the two members for Hokitika Fire Board. —Resolved that ’ Messrs Braddon an! Elcock be re-elected. Mr E. .L. Park, Hokitika Tennis Club, asking for, conditions of leasing of sections 32-36 (Whitcombe’s Square), Park Street. —Town Clerk te reply. Secretary, Greymouth Waterside Union, regarding payment to care (taker of Square for his services whem picnics are held there. —Referred tc Mr Herring for explanation.

Secretary, Hokitika. Fire Brigade, forwarding annual report on fire plugs and indicating those require attention. —Referred to the Inspector for attention.

Chairman Np. 12 District Highways Council, Greymouth, intimating that claims for work should he submitted and paid before March’ 31 next. —Received.

W. H. Steel, application for water service connection to M.R. 533, Weld Street. —Granted. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote stating that an Order-in-Council charges the gravel pit reserve in Stafford Street to a. Municipal endowment reserve. —Received.

The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £1360 12/10 payments £1034 14/6; debit balance £4BB 14/6. It was resolved that the Council donate £25 towards the earthquake relief fund.

Accounts amounting to £590 7/- were passed for payment. The overseer reported on various works carried out during the month. The abattoirs manager reported animals slaughtered during January: 21 cows, 19 heifers, 58 bullocks, 254 sheep. 107 lambs, 10 pigs, 7 calves. Fees received £69 10/-, compared with £73 14/- for same period last year.
