FIFTH TEST MATCH

WEST INDIES BEGIN WELL

TWO CENTURIES SCORED

[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]

SYDNEY, February 27.

The fifth test, Australia v. ’West Inidies, began in brilliant weather, with a strong south-westerly wind on a perfect wicket. The Australian team is as already cabled. The West Indies team is as follows: Grant, Roach, Headley, Sealy, Constantine, Scott, Barrow, Martin, Francis, Griffiths, Barlett; twelfth man, Birkett. . West Indies won the Joss, and elected to bat. Roach and Martin opened confidently, and they took the score to 70 by lively Then, when 313, Roach got in front to Grimmett. He hit five fours.

Oxenham was bowling well, and was difficult to score off. Martin had a couple of narrow escapes of being run out. He and Headley dug in. They were still together at lunch, when the score was one for 92. There were frequent changes of bowlers after lunch. Nevertheless the Australian attack was spiritless. Headley sparkled, and forced the pace, and runs came freely off every bowler. Woodfull’s placement of the fielding alone kept the runs down. , . At tea time the score was one for 193, Headley being 84, and Martin 70. The same pair carried on merrily after tea. They seemed to be inseparable, until Headley was out leg before to McCabe. He hit thirteen fours, and made 105. He received a great cheer. Grant then partnered Martin, and they played out time, the former hitting with great force, and the latter being more cautious. An appeal against the light at 5.45 p.m. was disallowed. With two for 298 the West Indies men had certainly given the Australians a taste of their own medicine. Scores: — -* » - ,
