TREASURE CHEST

FOUND IN POMPEII RUINS. NAPLES, December 6. One of the richest treasures offered, even by the wealth of ruined Pompeii, was found yesterday, A wooden chest, a good deal damaged by time, was discovered in a hoi’se in the Via Della Abbondanza, where excavations have been going on for some time. The chest contained a vast assortment of gold and silver objects, and must have been the safe of some patrician family, for besides magnificent gold earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces, mirrors, and scent-bottles, it contained an entire table service for four persons, consisting of spoons, forks, plates, goblets, and various dishes. There were also some gold and silver coins of Republican and Imperial dates. The whole collection is of untold value. The discovery is said to be superior in artistic worth to that from the Boscoreale in the Louvre at Paris. An inventory of the articles is being made. —Reuter.
