Rev. Dr Kennedy of Christchurch, will arrive in Greymouth to-day on a holiday visit.

Mr L. Mcßae, of the Customs Department, Wellington, and Mrs McRae, who have been visiting friends at Blaketown, left to-day on return.

Rev. Father Long will return to Greymouth to-day, after attending the Christchurch retreat for priests, which concluded yesterday.

Rev. Bro. Fergus returns to Greymouth, .to-day, from attending the annual conference of -New Zealand Catholic teachers held at Wellington.

A Sydney cablegram stated that the Federal Cabinet had decided to create Sir Frank Gavan Duffy, Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, in succession to Sir I. Isaacs.

Mr L. J. Mew, of the district telegraph engineer’s staff, Dunedin, has received notice of his appointment to the position of Dunedin business manager in the recently-formed commercial branch of the P. and T. Department.

Mr F. G. Major, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Blenheim, has been appointed assistant-manager at Wellington, and is to take up his new duties in March. His successor in Blenheim will be Mr A. J. Campbell, at present manager of the Gore branch of the bank.

Mr Kenneth M’Lean, a son of Mr and Mrs D. W. M’Lean, of Devonport, has been appointed finger-print expert for California. For the past nine years he has filled the position of deputy-mar-shal in the Federal Marshal’s office in Los Angeles.

The death of the famous dancer, Madame Pavlova is recorded by a cablegram from The Hague' where she had been ill from an attack of pleurisy. The result of a chill, which she caught last week through having to alight on the permanent way when a train in which she was travelling from the Riviera, to fulfil an engagement at the Hague, it was involved in a collision near Dijon. .

The staff of Messrs Duncan McLean and Co. met this afternoon for. the purpose of making, a presentation to Mr N. W. Jones, whose marriage took place recently at Gisborne. The presentation which took the form of a canteen of cutlery was made by Mr L. McGlashan, who expressed to Mr Jones the best wishes of all the staff. ' Messrs Coadwell, Gunri, z and A. E. The death occurred at her residence, Gibson Quay last evening, after a long illness, of Mrs Mary Foote, wife of Mr James Foote. Deceased was a native of England, 68 years of age. She landed on the West Coast in her infancy. Besides a husband, she leaves a family of three sons, Charles (Ruatapu), George (Dunedin), Robert (Hokitika) and five daughters, Mesdames L. Barltrop, M. Laughton, J. Jones (Hokitika), Thomson (Ruatapu), J. Shand (Invercargill). She also leaves two sisters, Mesdames Smith (Westport) and Forsyth (Kanieri).
