HUSBAND MURDERED

CLUE IN BRUTAL CRIME. NEWCASTLE, December 6. Returning from a visit to a cinema to her home in Oliver Street, South Moor, last night, Mrs Benfold found her husband, Charles Benfold (37), a hawker, murdered. Benfold was lying on a bed, with his head battered in. He was halfdressed, and the body w’as covered by an overcoat. No disturbance had been heard by neighbours, nor had two collie dogs, which were in the house, given an alarm, but there was evidence of a struggle in the disordered state of the room. Earlier in the day Benfold had gone to Newcastle to sell a number of canaries. It is not yet definitely established whether he sold the birds or not, but if he did he would have had a fair sum of money on him. It is understood that no money was found in the house, and this suggests robbery as the motive for the murder. The police discovered a heavy chopping axe, bearing blood-stains, in the house. An early arrest is expected.
