HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. [OUK OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA. December 13. The Hokitika Borough Council met' last evening. Present: Crs D. J. Evans (Deputy Mayor), T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, E. W. Heenan, Dr Teichelmann, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, Jas. King. An apology was received for the absence of the Mayor. The Chairman expressed pleasure on Cr Teichelmann’s return, and in seeing him looking so well after his illiiess. The New, Zealand Refrigerating Company, Christchurch, wrote forwarding amended returns of meat delivered into Hokitika during the months of September and October, 1930, viz., 35 sheep, 1 calf, and 1 pigand advising that the fees for 12 < sheep paid to Hokitika should belong to Greymouth, and the adjustment had been made by reduction of the fees for the foregoing months;, also advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of November 1930, viz., 61 sheep and 4 lambs—Received. Jas. Piner, Hon. Secretary, State Collieries Picnic, Runanga, applied for the use of Cass Square for February 14, 1931, for the purpose of annual pie nic.—Granted. A. Walsleben, Secretary, Reefton High School Picnic Committee, applied for the use of Cass Square on February 4, 1931, for annual picnic — Granted. Mr R. Wild, Hon. Secretary, Sawmillers’ Picnic Committee, wrote making application for use of Cass Square on February 28, 1931, for Sawmillers’ annual picnic.—Granted. Mr W. Stickle, Hon. Secretary, Cycling Club, applied for use of Cass Square on New Year’s Day for purpose of holding small Cycling Sports meeting, and permission to charge adults admission fee—Granted on usual conditions. Mrs M. J. Bergstrom, Hampden Street, wrote asking that drain at her frontage in Bealey Street receive attention. —Referred to P.W. Committee for immediate attention. The Secretary, Hokitika Harbour Board, forwarded copy of resolution passed by Harbour Board on sth inst, viz., “That permission granted the Borough Council to use the foreshore for a rubbish dump be terminated on this date, the road closed forthwith, the Borough Council be asked to have the offensive matter covered up, and the Council be furnished with a copy of the Ratepayers’ petition.—Received. The Chairman said that the Council must accept most of the blame for not keeping a proper supervision of the dump. He moved that the dump be cleaned by the Borough staff. Seconded by Cr Duff. 'Cr Heenan said that the dump should be shifted and that would, be his attitude on the Harbour Board. Cr Evans also moved that the Mayor and himself wait on the Harbour Board and endeavour to come to some agreement regarding the dump. —Carried. The District Telegraph Engineer wrote granting permission for erection of street name plates on telegraph poles in the. Borough on the following conditions: —(1) That name plates be erected between twelve and fourteen feet above street level; (2) That they do not in any way prevent access to Department’s wires; (3) That they are removable upon demand, and (4) That this Council accepts all respor. sibility for any accidents arising as a result of the erection of the signs. ,

The Manager, Kanieri Electric Ltd, Hokitika, granted permission to affix street name plates to electric light poles, ’such plates to be affixed at such a height and position, as not to in any way interfere with the conductors.

It was resolved that the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Town Clerk arrange for the reception of His Excellency. The Treasurer reported receipts £387/6/0; payments £475/17/0; debit £332/13/6. Accounts amounting to £696/15/8 were passed for payment. The Foreman’s report showed that the water in the reservoir averaged lift. 6in. during the month. The Abattoir’s Manager reported as follows: —Stock slaughtered during November: 20 cows, 34 heifers, 50 bullocks, 215 sheep, 5 lambs, 7 pigs, 7 calves. Condemned, nil. Fees received £6B/8/- against £5B/17/- for the same period last year. Tenders for 100 loads of sand were received, and . Mr B. E. Coyle (1/3 per load) being the lowest w'as accepted. It was resolved that the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Crs Heenan and Armstrong be a committee in connection with the Unemployment Representation scheme.
