KUMARA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

[OUE OWN COBRESPONDENT.]

The Kumara Borough Council met on Thursday. Present: The Mayor, Crs, Murphy, Stewart, McFarlane, Mcenany, Burrell, Hurren, McDonald, and Rudy. The Chairman of the Kumara School Committee wrote asking for a grant to assist in establishing a Dental Clinic. —Resolved on the motion of the Mayor, that the Committee be written to for an estimate of the cost of same, also ascertain what help was likely from other sources. The Engineer of the Public Works Department, Wellington, wrote stating that the papers submitted were not sufficiently in order to enable the petitioners’ prayer with respect to the inclusion of Kumara Borough in the Westland Power Board area, to be given effect; also enclosing a copy of the regulations. The Mayor said he had been in communication with Mr. Langford re the petition, who had promised to go into the matter when in Wellington. ' The Inspector of Explosives wrote stating he would arrange for an inspector to visit Kumara about the end of this month or early in October.

C. Hunt wrote for permission to cut firewood on the Borough endowment.—Permission granted, subject to the consent of the persons leasing the ground. J. Keating wrote asking for permission to erect a sign board across the footpath in front of his hotel. — Granted. Mr. J. O’Brien, M.P., whole stating the Minister of Lands had approved of a subsidy of £5O, £1 for £l, being granted to the Kumara Domain Board, for improvements to the Recreation Ground. The. Secretary of the Sports Committee wrote asking the Council to expend the grant received from the Government on the Recreation Ground. The Mayor said no money as yet had been received. Cr. Murphy moved that the Sports Committee, Football Club, and Domain Board meet on Sunday to decide on the most necessary work required. Cr. Hurren seconded. —Carried. R. G. Castle wrote complaining of the dangerous and unsightly state of the section opposite his Irotel, and asking if something could not be done to remedy the evil.—The Town Clerk to look into the matter and report to the next meeting. The Chairman of No. 12 Highways Council wrote forwarding schedule of amounts approved for expenditure on maintenance of Main Highways for

the current year. The Town Clerk was directed to write Mr. G. Wilson re sections in Main Street.

Cr. Murphy said he would like to know if the Council intended offering the Aero Club a piece of ground for an aerodrome. Cr. Burrell said he was in favour of offering a piece of ground. Ho considered the best place for a landing ground was on the top of Sandy’s Hill. Cr. Rudy: Yes, the suggestion is a good one, and the old dam would act as a landing place for sea planes.— Resolved that the Town Clerk proculre the necessary information in order that the matter could be dealt with.

In the absence of Cr. Hamer, Cr. Stewart read the cemetery report,, which was received and ordered to stand over until Cr. Hamer was in attendance. Cr. Rudy said one of the bridge planks was split down the centre and required renewing.—Resolved that the necessary planks be procured. The Chairman of Public JVorks reported on work done in the Borough. He had a look at the pipeline crossing the road at the top end of the town. If the line could be deviated and the pipes put at the back of Mr. Evenden’s property, it would make a good job. Only a little trestle work would bo required. Cr Rudy said about four chains of ditching was wanted, and there would be sufficient pipes to do the job. The Mayor moved that Air. Langford bo asked for permission to remove the pipes.—Carried. Cr. McFarlane complained of the Wandering cattle nuisance which was as bad as ever. Horses, cows and sheep were on the lawn all the time, and he ■wanted to know the position. If the Inspector would not attend to the nuisance they would have to get someone who would. Cr. Rudy said the wandering stock were a pest to everyone, and something would have to be done.

Mr. Hainer wrote stating that five cars had been parking for years between tho Bank of New Zealand and Church Street corner, particularly on a Saturday night, and enquired if the Borough had a parking place for curs. The Mayor said there was no parking place for cars in the Borough. Tho Mayor moved and Cr. Burrell seconded that the annual rates be struck.—Carried.

HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

HOKITIKA, September 27. The Hokitika Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. E. W. Heenan, G. W. Duff, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, Jas. King, D. J. Evans. Apologies for absence were received from Dr. Teichelmann and Messrs Elcock and Turner. The N.Z. Refrigerating Co. advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during August, 1930: viz. 215 sheep, and forwarding a cheque for £lO/15/- abattoir fees.—Received.

The Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, Greymouth, forwarded schedule of amounts approved for expenditure on maintenance of Main Highways in No. 12 district for the.current year. The amount of subsidy for Hokitika Borough being £250 (£2 for £l).—Received.

The manager, Kanieri Electric Ltd., applied for permission to install a projecting doorstop at premises in Weld Street. —The Council regretted it had no power to grant the application.

Messrs Taylor and Cummings, Revell Street, applied under Section 5-1 'of the Health Act for permission to store hjdes at roar of butcher’s shop in Revell Street. —Request granted, subject to the approval of the Health Inspector.

Mr. George Montagy, Weld Street, wrote asking that open drain from Section 1260 to Rolleston Street, be deepened sufficiently to allow sufficient fall for household drainage from his

section.—Referred to P.W. Committee to look into.

The Secretary local branch Canterbury Automobile Association, wrote asking the Council to direct that no solicitor’s fee be charged in undefended cases under the Motor Regulations. —After discussion, it was considered inadvisable to alter the present arrangements.

The Borough Treasurer reported receipts amounting So £lO2/0/4, payments £194/6/8, credit balance in bank £949/18/7. Accounts amounting to £715/18/1 were examined and passed for payment. It was resolved that tenders be called for the supply of gravel similar to last year.

It was resolved that application be made for the subsidy on £40 —Poppy Day money utilised on Rolleston Street drain.

Cr. Heenan again made a request that a lamp be placed at the corner of Camp and Beach Streets.—Resolved to have the lamp erected. Cr. Evans referred to the matter of street names being placed at the corner of streets and said some citizens were prepared to subscribe towards the work. It was resolved to ascertain the cost of procuring the name plates.
