RACING FIXTURES. AUGUST. 27 — Dannevirke R.C. 28— Dannevirke Hunt (Dannevirke). 30—Taranaki Hunt (New Plymouth). SEPTEMBER. 6 —Marton J.C. 13—Otago Hunt (Wingatui). 11, 13 —Wanganui J.C. 20 —Ashburton J.C. 20. 22 —Avondale J.C. 25, 27—Geraldine R.C. 27 —Hawke’s Bay J.C. TO-DAY’S NEWS. Tractarian: A North Island owner was nibbling after Tractarian last week, but his owner preferred to keep his horse. Pink Coat: Reports from Washdyke state that Pink Coat has shaken off the rheumatism which affected him recently, and has been doing half-pace work at Washdyke. He will be sent along faster shortly, with the object of trying out the leg, which caused his retirement last season. Again in Work: Now a nine-year-old, Count Cavour is again an active attendant at Riccarton. He only Avon one race last season out of ten starts, but as that, event was the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, which carried a stake of £lOOO to the winner, the old gelding paid his expenses. Into the Enemy’s Camp: If extra taxation is imposed on racing and trotting clubs (says “Sentinel”) they should seriously consider carrying the war into the enemy’s country and reduce cards to seven races a day. A stake would be saved and the reduction would -not hurt either branch of sport, but it would seriously reduce the amount of revenue gathered by exploitation of both branches of sport. Carinthia Will Not Spell: Carinthia will have to carry big weights in any hurdle races for which ho may be entered now, but it is not intended to turn him out just yet. He is a gross fellow who requires a lot of work to get him back into condition after a spell, and for that reason ho will be kept going for a while yet; and it will be no surprise if he is back at Riccarton in November.

Jenny Diver: Last season My Own began in the ranks of hacks. She later won the Dannevirke Cup against quite a useful field, and she finished up the season by gaining classical honours by winning the Great Northern Oaks. As stable-mate Jenny, Diver is engaged in the President’s Hack, to be run at Dannevirke next week, and it would appear that a similar programme will bo attempted wtih the latter.

Quarter Deck: Is being educated for hurdle racing at present, and she may be accorded a nomination for the Geraldine nieeting. She and Haze both display an inclination toward the game and may prove useful augmentations to Riccarton’s small band of fencers. DANNEVIRKE HUNT CLUB. THE ACCEPTANCES. OTAHUHU TROTTING CLUB PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS [special to “star.”] AUCKLAND, August 22. The annual meeting of the members of the Otahuhu Trotting Club was held this afternoon. The President, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet said: “We have every reason to look back with pride to the success and good work done by the Otahuhu Trotting Club in fostering the support of trotting. The stakes we were giving, ultliougli we o«ly had four days’ trotting, entitled us to be classed as the third biggest Trotting Club in the Dominion. We looked ahead for the future and owned a splendid trotting track at Otahuhu, second to none in New Zealand, and did everything in our power to assist owners and trainers, and I feel sure under the amalgamation that the same assistance will be given, for we are all there with one object in view, —to give the public good and clean sport. The Prime Minister stated that he must have revenue. If so, why not tax some commodities that escape taxation altogether. For instance crude oil, of which sixty million gallons are imported yearly, twenty-seven million gallons from the U.S.A., and thirtythree million gallons from the Dutch West Indies, both foreign countries, escapes • taxation altogether. Thirty million gallons of this is used on the land, and thirty million gallons on the sea. The oil used on the land is putting a lot of people out of work, as it is replacing coal, etc. However, results will prove the truth bf my words. The Gaming bill is coming forward this session, and I think that with the assistance from the racing and trotting representatives, it has every chance of becoming law, although I am sorry to say the trotting representatives are not giving the assistance they should to the racing.” “RACES FOR JUVENILES.”

“I quite agree with the views expressed by the President of the Auckland Trotting Club that two and three-year-old races should be placed on the programme. One should certainly be tried for the next Autumn meeting, ,for at present owners have their two-year-olds turned out in the paddock as they have no races to look forward to. By encouraging these races we may get more owners in the game. There is no doubt that trotting is not gaining ground, as it should in Auckland; no new owners are coming into the sport, and no new horses. Why this is, and how to remedy the matter, will be the concern of the new committee.” “The handicapping system is. to have another year’s trial and I think if the handicappers carry out their handicaps as laid down by the system, it should work out all right, but there is one alteration that I think should be made, and that is when a horse has done better, say than 4.27 to the two miles, then the handicapper should use his own discretion as the system has put all the good horses on tight marks out of the game. Under the new system a horse may have done 4.22, but cannot be put on a tighter mark than say 4.27.” “In conclusion, I say ‘an revoir, but not good bye,’ we have made a success of our old club, and I sincerely hope that the object of the amalgamation to better the interests of the sport, will be achieved, and it can be done by all working together and playing the game.”
