SPORTING

TROTTING.

MEETINGS TO COME.

August 13, 16.—N.Z. Metropolitan

T.C. September 6. —New Brighton T.C. October 4—Methven T.C. October 11. —Waikato T.C. October 18— Northland T.C. October 25, 27.—Greymouth T.C. October 25, 27.—Auckland T.C. October 27.—Oamaru T.C. November 1. —Wellington T.C.

LIGHT HARNESS PERFORMERS. Pluto:

Won the August Handicap on Saturday from end to end, and Avon on his merits. It was at this meeting twelve months to the day that Pluto scored his first and only win for last season, when he won the Selwjn Handicap, although ho started on sixteen occasions after that, his next best being a second in the Ashburton Handicap in June.

John Mauritius: Was not long in giving a return to his new owner, Mr. C. L. Kettle, and now that he has broken a long run of failures, may continue with the splendid form shown on Saturday. At his best he is a really good trotter.

Pro Rata: Broke a leg in the Advance Handicap on Saturday, and had to be destroyed. He was the first of the piogeny of Drusus to race, and showed promising form, his untimely end being a severe loss to his lady owner, Mrs. A. Fairbairn.

Neeoro: Winner of the Queen Mary Handicap on Saturday, is to be offered for sale at the conclusion of the present Metropolitan T.C. meeting. Linkman: Was looked upon as the most likely winner of the August Handicap before Saturday’s big race, but during the running never flattered bis supporters. He won the Queen Mary Handicap on the opening day of this meeting last year, and it is likely, that with the going more in his favour to-nwrrow, he will appropriately add the King George Handicap. Writer: Was slow to begin on Saturday, and any chance he may have held was lost by this. The confidence placed in him on the opening day, may be well worth renewing to-morrow, as he appears to hold bright prospects in the Avon Handicap. Vendome: Appears to have been fortunate in annexing the International Handicap, for she obtained a lucky run-up the straight, enabling her to get there in the last stride. Vendome is consistent, and has a great burst of speed, short courses being to her benefit. Warplane: , Is a promising pacer, and the manner in which he won the Selwyn. Handicap promises for the Auckland-OYvned son of Man o’ War another victory in the near future. Engagement: Her form in the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday was the subject of an enquiry following the race, but no action was taken. She put in a skip every now and again, but no action was taken by the Stewards. George Rey: Is a horse of promise, and looks like developing into a stayer. He stuck to his work gamely to win the Advance Handicap. Muriel de Oro: Found the journey too far in the August Handicap, and when again harnessed for the International Handicap, her previous efforts proved a handicap to her chances in the latter event. Native Prince: Came from a long way back in the International Handicap, and was racing past everything at the finish. His turn may come in to-morrow’s Speedway Handicap.

The Second Day: The Metropolitan meeting will be continued to-morrow, when the going should be much improved, and Saturday’s form may be discounted by several of the first day contestants. Suggestions are: —

Improvers’ Handicap (3.32 class): Nelson Boy, Maxegin. Dash Handicap (2.14), saddle: Hector’s Own, El Direct. King George Handicap (4.29): Linkman, Dundas Boy. Belgium Handicap (4.40): Shady Spot, Apex. Lincoln Handicap (2.47): Royal Comrade, Pageant. Avon Handicap (4.39): Engagement, Rose Audo.

Canterbury Handicap (4.35): Gang Awa, Harold Logan. Speedway Handicap (2.44); Native Prince, Travis Axworthy.

A.J.C. PROFITS DWINDLE.

SYDNEY, August 12

The'combined profits of the Australian Jockey Club from Randwick and Warwick Farm racing for the year amounted to £3048, compared with £34,693 for the previous year. The falling off in attendances, and increased taxation, were responsible for the reduced profit.
