ART UNIONS

RUSH OF APPLICATIONS

[PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

WELLINGTON, August 11. The art union as a means of finance came again before a Cabinet Minister, when a deputation from the Native Bird Society waited on the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle. With the money proposed to be so raised, it was stated the Society proposed further to awaken the general public, including school children, with regard to the preservation of native birds, and to establish sanctuaries. The Minister remarked that it was rather a change to have an application for an art union to raise money for the protection of native birds. He remarked that he had several applications from new clubs and one from the Cancer Research' Committee, thus it could not be said that, art unions were wholly harmful. The Society would have its claim noted, as he was in thorough sympaJiy with its objects. The decision did not rest with him, but with a sub-committee of the Cabinet. It was the aim of the Departments to co-ordinate all efforts for the objects the Society had in view.
