MEETINGS

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. A meeting of interest to women was held on Wednesday evening, in the committee room of the Town Hall, when Miss A. Stops, voluntary organiser of the Women’s Institute, gave an address on the aims and objects of the Institute to a representative gathering of members and those interested in the recently-formed Greymouth Branch. The Mayor, Mr J. W- Greenslade, was present at the opening of the meeting, and in a short speech gave assurance of his interest and support of the movement, wjuch aimed at better citizenship. Until a permanent room has been OU J aS quarters for the Institute, the Mayor has given permission for tire Committee Room of the Town Hall to be used free of charge. The many aspects to the activities of the Women’s Institute were shown by Miss Stops when she outlined in a most comprehensive manner what the Greymouth Branch should try to follow in their monthly meetings and social gatherings. Many -ways of social service were shown, and how best women could share subjects of interest to themselves and broaden their sphere of usefulness for mutual benefit. Miss Stops pointed out that there are many women in the outlying and country districts who would find such an institute of great value, bringing those who live more isolated lives, into touch with a movement which would give them an interest in common with a large number of otherwomen. * Miss Stops asked if among those present there were any who would volunteer to teach or lecture on any subject of general interest and received several responses which will assist in making the programme for the year.

HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

[OUE OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

HOKITIKA, August 9.

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; present: the Mayoi’ (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, A. R. Elcock, Dr. Teichelmann, G. Heinz, J. King, D. J. Evans, A. C. Armstrong.

A deputation from the Lake Kanieri Boat Club, consisting of Messrs Radford, H. M. Coulson and J. N. Robinson, waited upon the Council concerning an order issued by the Commissioner of Crown Lands about 18 months ago, for the removal of the Club’s boatsheds from the landing to a spot at Hans Bay. Mr Coulson asked the Council to pass a resolution to the effect that the Council had no objection to the sheds remaining in their present position. He was sure the holding of regattas there three days in the year did not cause any pollution of the water. The intake now was further out in the lake and deeper under the surface. He would like a resolution in order to have the matter reviewed by the“ present Commissioner.

Mr Radford seated that the BoatingClub caused no contamination by its regattas. Furthei” round the lake there was swimming, picnicking, paddling etc. Motor boatmen considered the Kanieri Lake, thp finest sheet of water in New Zealand for the sport of motor boat racing, and he believed that in years to come it would be the place where the championships would be raced. All the Club required, was an expressioin from the Council to the effect that it did not consider the boat sheds in their present site a danger nor a nuisance. Mr Robinson pointed out that Hans Bay was unsuitable for motor boat racing, as he knew from experience. The present was the only suitable site. . The Mayor stated the Council had previously stated it hjid no objection to the sheds remaining, and he saw no reason for altering that decision. Dr. Teichelmann said there was less chance of contamination while the sheds are near the outlet. It was the safest place on the lake for them. He moved and the Mayor seconded that the Council re-affirm its former resolution to the effect that it has no objection to the boat sheds remaining at the landing. This was carried.
