ENTERTAINMENTS

OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT The seating capacity was again taxed, to the utmost last evening, Marilyn Miller and the beautiful picture “Sally” being the attraction. Nothing finer than this combination of play and player could be wished for. Marilyn Miller is wonderful, she acts and sings in alluring fashion, and when it comes to dancing, she seems to be mspired. Such dancing, so well reproduced on films, lias not been previously seen here, either in a talking picture or on the stage. ‘‘Sally” will again be presented to-night and Monday. Married without thought, divorced without delay. Is that the trend o modern Youth? See for yourself m the most lavish, peppy and fast-moving romantic drama of modern times. KAIATA SOCIAL. A successful euchre and flaiicb was held in Kaiata Schoolroom last night. Mr J. Muir (Kaiata) won the prize, the booby prize going to Master S. Johnstone (Kaiata). Supper was served by the Ladies’ Committee. BAND CONCERT. If the size and enthusiasm of the audience at the Town Hall, last evening can be taken as an indication, then the first honorary members’ concert for the 1930 season of the Greymouth Municipal Band must be reckoned an unqualified success. The band items had been well chosen and the band handled the pieces, with a delicacy of touch and an artistic restraint that reflected creditably on the ability of the conductor, Mr W. M.- Garth and on the individual talent of the members of the band. A. cornet solo “The Caledonian” played by Mr A. Smith evoked round after round of applause. In his encore Mr Smith nearly doubled the applause by his splendid rendition of “Silver Threads Among the Gold.” The full band was heard to good advantage in every piece it played, scoring a particular success, however in Trenchard’s Humoresque “Buy a Broom” and Raymonds “A String of Pearls” and the waltz “Wildflower.” Not the least enjoyable were the vocal items. Miss I. Kitchingham, Mrs C. Moss, Mr R. Richards'and Mr J. Hadland each gave well chosen and excellently rendered songs. Mrs Moss and Messrs Richards and Hadland gave two vocal trios which the audience fully appreciated. Miss D. Broad and Mr T. F. Savage were efficient accompanists.

The Mayor (Mr J. W. Greenslade) in a short speech paid a tribute to the work of the bandsmen and Mr W. M. Garth, who were, he said, working in a purely honorary way. Internal difficulties in the Band had disappeared. Mr Greenslade said the financial situation was improving. At the end of last financial year the band had had to face a liability of £740, but £llO of this sum had been raised and if permission could be obtained from the Minister, an art union would be held to augment the band’s funds. Mr W. M. Garth was honorary treasurer notv as well as honorary conductor and Mr Greenslade was sure that he would make an efficient and economical treasurer.
