GREY MAIN SCHOOL

COMMITTEE MEETING The Greymouth Main School Committee met last evening, Messrs R. A. Barrowman (chairman), J. C. McDonald, W. Scott, R. J. Williams, and H. Herring, secretary being present. In reply to a request from the Cobden School Committee asking that the dental nurse treat pupils of that school, it was decided to advise Cobden that the nurse was required to complete the schools in the Greymouth district before treating the pupils at Cobden. The Chairman remarked that the Headmasters of the various schools were favourable to their scholars visiting the Winter Show at Christchurch." Facilities for the accommodation of pupils had been improved on that provided for the previous excursion.

Mr. Scott asked whether the attendance of pupils would suffer by the excursion. ,

The Chairman replied in the negative stating that pupils attending the Show would be marked as present on the school roll.

Portion of the cost incurred for the lighting, heating and cleaning of the Scouts’ Hall during the period it was in use as a class room, was refunded by the Canterbury Education Board. Mr. Scott suggested that in view of proposals aimed at the cutting of subsidies for schools, the Committee should ask the Board for a subsidy, before proceeding with improvements to school grounds. The improvements were essential and pressure should be brought to have them effected; The Secretary said that as the Committee had £25 in hand, they could afford to proceed with the work. The Chairman suggested that the Visiting Committee report be forwarded to the Board to show that the work was necessary, and a resolution to this effect was carried.

The Chairman, in reply to a question by Mr. Scott said that Miss Valentine, Departmental officer in charge of special classes paid periodical visits to all the schools.
