STOLEN DRESS
SEEN LN STREET.
SYDNEY, July 29
When a woman, whose home was recently robbed, noticed a young girl wearing one of her dresses in the city yesterday she set in motion police inquiries which resulted in unexpected developments. A girl, who is IT years of age and who has an infant, was walking along the street wearing the stolen dress when the owner approached her. The girl said that she was sorry, but that if she was forgiven she would give back the dress and other proceeds of the robbery.. The owner accompanied her to a flat in the Darlinghurst police district and recovered her goods. The matter ended there until the woman related her strange story to a friend who counselled her to inform the police of the occurrence at once. She did so, with the result that Plainclothesmen Richards and Malone raided the fiat. While they were there they searched another flat in the same building and recovered £2OO worth of property, the proceeds of another suburban crime. They also seized a watch and some jewellery. When they returned to the Darlinghurst statio nthey informed the C. 1.8. of theVmatter. At the same time a woman had been telling Constable Phimister, of the C. 1.8., that a youngwoman had entered her shop in Castlereagh Street, and had asked to use the telephone. She had been allowed to do so and after she had left it was found that a wallet containing a watch and jewellery, valued at about £9O, was missing. Constable Phimister had taken the particulars of her loss when Richards telephoned regarding his discoveries. ■ He walked from the telephone to the woman and said, I have just received a report that your jewellery has been recovered.” The wo : man seemed to disbelieve the assertion. “Are you joking?” she asked. She was assured that her property was in safe hands. The police expect to be able to solve a number of crimes and also anticipate being able to stop a system of thieving which until yesterday had been annoyingly mysterious.
