An outbreak of smallpox at sea is a terrifying thing! Years ago, when the old “Arawa” was en route from Sydney to London, a lady saloon passenger fell sick. Ship’s doctor said “smallpox,” and consternation reigned aboard. The ship was then in the Suez Canal, and the patient was put ashore at Ismailia. A bad case! Doctor advised everybody to keep on smoking. They did. Not another case occurred! Was that due to tobacco-smoke? The passengers thought it, was. Tobacco smoke is a marvellous disinfectant anyhow, ’.raking it “by and large,” as the sailors say, baccy does far more good than harm, when it does harm its because its choked with Nicotine—as the Imported brands generally are.
