WINDSOR OAKS

HISTORIC TREES CUT DOWN.

WINDSOR, June 7

About eight of the famous old oaks of Windsor Forest have been cut down during the past few days. The trees were near Goat Pen Hill and close to Windsor and Ascot main road, and within a. short distance of Cranbourne Tower.

Some of the trees were a thousand years old. and most of them dated back to tho Saxon kings, and had become quite hollow. An official told a “Sunday Times” representative today that, tho reason the old oaks were being removed was that they had become a. danger to the public, and unfortunately motorists, who are now allowed to park their cars on the turf near the hollow trees, filled thqm with empty bottles and litter.. Often tho oilicials found that, the rubbish had been set on fire.

It was then decided that, the very oldest of the trees, which were practically only skeletons, should bo removed. by permission, of the King, who is ranger of Windsor Great Park and Forest.
