COAL MINES BILL.

After some discussion, the House of Lords this afternoon agreed to a slight alteration which the House of Commons had made in the House of Lords’ amendment to the Coal Mines Bill. Tho compromise effected between the two Houses regarding the spreadover of working hours will thus be incorporated in the. measure for the royal assent.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMP E N S A TIO N

LONDON, July 23

In tho House of Commons, Mr Lathan (a. Labour member) introduc ed a Bill providing for the payment of compensation for loss of employment. He said the Bill would apply to nonmanual workers, such as clerks, professional and semi-professional workers who were deprived of employment on account of some act by their employers. The IBill would cover joinnalists, of whom six hundred were affected by the recent combination between the “Chronicle” and the “News.” The compensation proposed consisted of one-twelfth of their remuneration for each complete year of service. The Bill was read the first time.

JAPANESE UNEMPLOYMENT. KOBE, July 24. Unemployment is daily becoming more serious. The newspaper “Kokumin” reports that the metropolitan police have taken elaborate precautions to deal with hunger riots. The number needing relief is estimated at 450,000. MISSION KETCH WRECKED. RANGOON, July 24. The Methodist Missionary Society’s auxiliary ketch, Bromilow, has been lost a’t Samarai, Papua, with seven members of the native crew. The missionary in charge, the Rev. Lassan, and one boy were saved. KILLED BY LIGHTNING. DELHI, July 24. A party of three Europeans and six Indians proceeding through Baltal Pass. Kashmir, were struck by lightning and were killed instantly. A GENEROUS GIFT. LONDON, July 24. Interest is taken in the announcement that Mr Edward Harkness, the American railway magnate, of Scottish descent, is devoting a large sum to educational and social ■work in Great Britain. The sum is understood in Parliamentary circles to be at least two millions sterling. Mr S. Baldwin will possibly be a member of the Committee which will recommend outlets of the fund, but nothing is likely to be decided hastily.

BRITAIN’S TRADE REVIVAL.

RUGBY, July 23

Sir Frederick Lewis, chairman of the Furness, Withey Coy., great ship ping firm, at to-day’s meeting of that, Company, prophesised the approach of a trade revival. He said: “My optimistic outlook is justified by the belief that the existing conditions are part of a. stage-setting for a trade revival which will come as surely as anything which it is possible to predict.”

DUBLIN CATHEDRAL

LONDON, July 13

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin will have a great cathedral commensurate with its importance situated in the aristocratic quarter of Merrion Square. The Earl of Pembroke has sold the necessary land to Archbishop Byrne for £lO,OOO. The building will' cost several hundred thousand pounds.

DANCER’S GAMBLING

LONDON, July 15.

Playing at the Casino at Le Touquet Miss Jennie Dolly, one of the dancing sisters, won about £lOO,OOO. After four o’clock yesterday afternoon she was staking' £12,000 ton every coup, and broke the bank four times. As soon as a fresh 1.000,000 francs was secured by the bank, she won it. By 3 o’clock this morning Miss Dolly had lost nearly all of her winnings.
