TRAINED NURSES’ ASSN.

AN OPENING SOCIAL

The opening social of the Grey Trained Nurses’ Association, took place last evening at the Nurses' Home. The room was tastefully decorated with birch, St. John’s wort and flowers. Several apologies for absence were received.

The hostesses were: Mis§ Lord (President), Mrs Bird and Mrs Wilkinson (Vice-Presidents). Dr. J. Mcßrearty, in opening the proceedings said: “I have been asked to make this speech as I am the youngest doctor present, and I have to congratulate the Association on opening a local branch.” Referring to the object of the Association, Dr. Mcßrearty said that he must mention the many instructive advantages which would accrue. Lectures would be given and papers read, and discussed, professional magazines would be provided and the meetings would be of great value. Then of course there was the social side, and this was very important, and must not he forgotten.

‘‘l may say,” added Dr. Mcßrearty, “that this meeting takes me back 30 years, to the days of Dr. Morice, senr., and gives me a review from the days when the hospital staff consisted of six nurses and a caretaker, and major operations were carried out in small ante-rooms. I am pleased indeed to see the formation of a branch of the Association in Greymouth. I have long-thought that there should be one and I will close by wishing the Greymouth Branch every success, a yearly increase in membership, and the very best of good luck.” Dr. Bird and Dr. Wilkinson endorsed Dr. Mcßrearty’s sentiments and wished the association every success.

During the evening songs and other items were rendered. Among the performers were Mrs Moss, song, “If Thou Wert Blind” and “Fleurette.” Miss Adkins, song, “Fragile Things”; Miss Coburn, violin solo, “Serenade”; Miss Bush, recitations; “At Mrs Bates’ Tea Party” and “The Vicar’s Presentation”; Miss Thwaites, dance, “The Spanish Dance.” The accompanists were Misses Coburn and Adkins.
