The West Coast Rugby Union’s team, who are proceeding to Motueka to play the Golden Bay-Motueka team for the Seddon Shield, to-day played a try-out match here against the Nel- ' son representatives. The game was interesting, and the West Coast team won by 21 points to 16, after an open and bright display. The West Coast backs were in good form. Their straight running and accurate passing were the features of the match. The score at half-time was 10 points all. A. Fong, the West Coast centre, who was the best back on the ground, scored a try at the end of a spectacular passing movement. The West Coast winger Martyn also scored a try, after running for over half the length of the field. Martyn converted both of the tries in the second spell for the visitors. In the second spell the West Coasters notched three tries, and again showed good form. Dennehy, the West. Coast wing-forward, played an outstanding game in this spell. He scored one Of the tries. The other tries for the visitors were gained by the winger, Pfahlert, and the fiveeighth, Kennedy. Martyn converted one of the tries in the second half, and the final score was: —

Wanganui Rugby team opened their South Island tour here to-day, defeating South Canterbury after a pool' display by thirteen points to eight. Both teams comprised comparatively young players, none of whom came up to rep. standard. BANKS DEFEAT P. AND T. The annual Rugby match between the Banks and the Post and Telegraph Department was . played yesterday afternoon at Victoria Park. Banks were the winners by 22 points to 9 in an interesting game. At half-time the score was six all, and neither side seemed to have the advantage, but after the interval the Banks added another sixteen points to their total. The game was fast, and the pace told on the P. and T. team. In the first half tries were scored by Baldwin and H. Seebeck for the P. and T, and HayMcKenzie scored a try and kicked a penalty for the Banks. In the second half Baldwin scored one try for the P. and T., while Jenkins, HayMcKenzie, O’Halloran and Warnes ran up tries for the winners. Two tries were converted by Hay-McKenzie and a further attempt at conversion was disallowed by the referee (Mr F. Baillie) because the ball was not placed correctly.

AV.’ AVAKEFIELD RETIRES. (Recd. July 24, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Juty 23. The Rugby footballer, AV. AA 7akefield, announces his definite retirement from the game. N.Z. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. AVELLINGTON, July 23. Arrangements for the fourth test match between New Zealand and the British team, at AVellington on August 9, were further advanced at a meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union last evening. Prices for additional seating accommodation at Athletic Park were fixed at 7/6 and 5/6 for seats within tin? enclosure, both including tax. The Wellington Savage Club’s invitation to the Manager of the New Zealand team, and officials of the New Zealand Rugby Union, to attend the Korero, at the Masonic Hall on the night of the test, was accepted. An invitation had also been accepted by Mr. Baxter on behalf of the British team.

Mr. A. C. Kitto raised the question of different rulings being given in local matches and games against the British team. He considered that the rulings should be uniform.

Mr. Dean explained that it had been decided at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Union that all matches against tho British team should be played under the English Rugby Union’s and International Board’s rules.

It was pointed out that some referees in matches against the British team gave a free kick against a player who took a forward pass, whereas the rules of the International Board laid it down that a scrum should be ordered for a forward pass. It was decided to instruct all referees in control of matches played by the British team, that the International Board rules must apply. The Thames Valley Primary Schools’ Union wrote, thanking the New Zealand Union for having allocated to it the Vancouver Cup. Rules were now being drawn up, and challenges would bo accepted from any primary schools Rugby Union in the North Island. A request from the Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association of New South Wales to send a high schools’ team to tour the North Island of the Dominion, during the spring vacation, was referred to the Secondary Schools’ Association. WEST COAST UNION MEETING. The West Coast Rugby Union met last evening. The President, Mr. A. A. Adams occupied the chair, and Messrs J. Guy, .1. Kay, T. O’Donnell, J. McLean, T. Scott, W. Williams, I. Steel, J. Kyle, W. Bring, F. Eggletonand F.Wilson were' also present. In the absence of Mr. N. W. Jones, Mr. Wilson carried out the duties of secretary. Advice was received from Ngakawau Club that their senior team contemplated visiting Greymouth about September 12, and asking that a match bo arranged for September 13 or 17. The matter was deferred until a later meeting. Notification from the Principal of the Greymouth Technical College that Hokitika District High School had agreed to play Technical School in the first of the Newman Cup fixture, on Saturday next was received, and confirmed. f The New Zealand Union notified i that the recent complaint from the West Coast Union in reference to the I method of appointment of referees for ' British matches had been forwarded

to the Referees’ Appointment Board for that body’s consideration. Application will be made from the Union to the United Club for the use of that Club’s jerseys during the junior representative match on Saturday. A resolution moved by Mr. Eggleton and seconded by Mr. I. Steel that a protest be lodged to the New Zealand Union pointing out the delay in receiving a definite decision on the protest from the Excelsior Club, was carried. Mr. AV. Bring was appointed manager of the Grey senior B team to play Hokitika, at Hokitika on Saturday. The train by which players will travel leaves Greymouth at 12.30 p.m. Mr. I. Steel will be manager of the junior team to play Hokitika at Victoria Park on Saturday. The local team will assemble at the Park Hotel at 2.30 p.m. Cobden Club were granted permission to play Ruru Club at Ruru. Taafe and Furness notified that they were unavailable for the senior match at Hokitika.
