HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

HOKITIKA, July 12

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present.: the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, A, R. Elcock, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, Jas. King. The Mayor referred to the passing of Sir Joseph Ward, and said the Council should express its regret, and appreciation of his work. Apologies for absence were made for Crs Evans, Teichelmann and Turner. Three months’ leave of absence was granted Cr. Turner, who is ill in Christchurch.

C. L. Renton, wrote that the footpath fronting his residence in Davie Street be lowered between six and nine inches to bring it to the same level as adjoining frontages, and that the spoil be used for filling up hollow in the street at his frontage.—Referred to the P.W. Committee to be carried out.

T. A. Breeze, wrote asking that footpath and water table at his frontage in. Hampden Street received attention, as the approach is under water when it rains.—Work being done. J. Conning, Hon? Secretary, Hokitika. School Committee wrote asking the Council for a grant towards the expenses incurred at the Dental Clinic, Hokitika school. —Resolved that two guineas be granted. The Minister of Internal Affairs, and Chairman, Town Planning Board, wrote intimating that the Town Planning Board, having carefully considered the evidence tendered at the enquiries, is prepared to recommend to the Local Authorities concerned the adoption of the regional boundaries described in Schedule of the West Coast region, and illustrated on map submitted. The districts comprised in the schedule are the counties of Buller, Grey, and Westland, and part of Inangahua; Boroughs of Westport, Greymouth, Brunner, Kumara, Hokitika, Ross, and Runanga, and the independent town district of Cobden; and in view of the fact that certain Local Authorities were not represented at any of these enquiries, it has been decided by the Board to regard the boundaries now proposed as provisional only, and to refer the matter back to all Local Authorities concerned for their further consideration before a final recommendation is made. It is desirable, therefore, that the Board should have from this Council a definite expression of opinion upon the provisional boundaries, as they affect or are likely to affect the district under the jurisdiction of this Council.—Resolved that the regional plan be approved as recommended by the Town Planning Board. The Auditor-General forwarded the balance sheet for the Borough of Hokitika, for the year ending March 31, 1930, duly audited and certified correct.

The District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, forwarded particulars under which the Government is prepared to grant subsidies to Local Bodies on Relief Works. —Resolved that the Chairman Public Works, the Mayor and Crs. King and Heinz be a sub-committee to consider the question.

The Borough Foreman reported on work carried out during the month. It was reported that, the average depth in the reservoir for the month was Bft. 6in. It was also reported that the new .110 chains of flume piping near Lake Kanieri had been connected up, and a the flow of water was almost doubled.

The Abattoirs showed animals slaughtered for the month: 11 cows. 25 heifers, 69 bullocks, 192 sheep, 7 lambs, 18 pigs. 31 calves, condemned: 1 sheep. Fees received £64 !)/-, for same period last year £7B 9/-.

An application by 11. Steel for a drain in Weld Street, was considered, and it was resolved that the applicant put in a grease trap, and run into Weld Street drain.

PL was resolved that. Weld Street between Sale and Brittan Street be piped for two chains 20 feet. The usual resolutions re the striking of rates were moved and carried.

The overseer in describing one of the drains of the Borough, said’ the® stench arising from it was killing the blackberry growth.
