Mrs F. Baldock, who lias been visiting Greymouth, has returned to .Timaru,

Mr and Mrs C. IT. Cleaver, who have been on a holiday trip to the North Island, returned to Reefton yesterday.

Mr R. Wild, of Hokitika, is the only ’candidate nominated for election to the Canterbury Education Board, to represent the north-west ward.

Mr T. R. Cresswell, M.A., has been temporarily, appointed an inspector of secondary schools by the Education Department. .

The funeral of the late Mr W. A. Barnhill took place this afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. Rev. J. Heyward, of Hokitika,• conducted the graveside service.

The engagement is announced of Miss May Joyce Veitch, second daughter of the Hon. W. A. and Mrs Veitch, to Mr Walter Spedding Long, .•son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Long, of Kelburn, Wellington.

The death occurred this morning (telegraphed our Hokitika correspondent) of Percy Crawford Ross, at the residence of his parents, Gibson Quay. •Deceased, who was the third son of Mr and Mrs Robert Ross, was forty years of age, and a native of Hokitika. ' Ho had been ailing for some time. Deceased was formerly a member, of the Hokitika Band. Besides his parents he leaves five brothers and five' sisters.

The death is announced from Wellington of Mr. Arthur Warburton, aged 82. In 1863 he joined the staff of the Bank of New South Wales. He rose to be a manager at Feildihg and Te Aro. He resigned about 1883 and established the sharebroking and financial agency firm of Arthur Warburton and Co. He had considerable business interests in Wellington and for 22 years was a member of the Board of Governors of Wellington College and the Girls’ High School. —Press Assn.
