SOCCER FOOTBALL

WESTLAND COMPETITON Competition games were played in good weather on Saturday. By Taylorville playing Blackball, the first round was completed. Cobden who had every chance to win on Saturday, slipped a valuable point to Rewanui. The Dobson game resulted in a win for-the home team. The results were: — Dobson 5, Greymouth 1. Cobden 0, Rewanui 0. Blackball 1, Taylorville 1.

COBDEN v. REWANUI

Rewanui kicked off against a blinding sun and were soon in Cobden territory. McLaren sent past. End to end play followed. Moore and Kelly came into the picture and put up a good game keeping the Cobden forwards in check. A spell of mid-field play saw the Cobden forwards tip : tap the ball from one to the other which proved to no advantage as the Rewanui halfbacks received possession time and again to set their forwards to the Cobden end. Back came Cobden and their outfield work was good but when it came to finishing no Cobden forward had any idea where the goals lay. Rewanui had the better of the game up to this period, and would have been value to have led at halftime on the play. The interval came with neither team having scored. On the resumption, Cobden pressed and sent harmlessly past. Tiunion, on Cobden’s left, sent over a few crosses which Timlin dealt with in a masterly fashion by clearing his lines time and again. Moore came up and tried his utmost to get his forwards going but only Marley who ploughing a lone hand seemed likely to take advantage of anything that was going. From twenty yards he drove the ball wide and sent past. At this period of the game Cobden had a number of corners which proved fruitless, Timlin. Marley and Moore never hesitating to clear their lines first time. Time and again the Cobden forwards had opportunities to score but lacked finishing power. The closest call to a score happened at the other end when Marley outwitted Jackson and struck the upright with a good shot a few minutes from time. End to end play followed and time came with the score being a scoreless draw. The game never reached a high standard, and was probably the poorest game that has been played between these two teams. Cobden, who stood a good chance of winning the competition, now nearly find themselves out of the running. Their forwards are entirely to blame as their marksmanship is very poor. Kelly and Moore were Rewanui’s b6St playeis, whilst J. Cowe and Bennett were best for Cobden. DOBSON v. GREYMOUTH Played at Dobson. The ball was kicked off before a fair attendance. Dobson were in the ascendancy and Greymouth defence were called upon to clear their lines time and again, until W. White notched the first goal for the home side. Even play followed each goal being visited in turn and the Greymouth, players would likely have equalised had they had a little more experience with their finishing. However, back came Dobson and Shortt added a second, and Henderson shortly afterwards scored a third. The interval came with Dobson leading by three goals to nil. In the second half Dobson scored twice through W. White which gave him the hat-trick and Greymouth once. After this, Greymouth played better and were lathei unfortunate not to add to their score. Time came with the result Dobson 5, Greymouth 1.

BLACKBALL 1, TAYLORVILLE 1

At Blackball on Saturday, before a fair attendance, the Blackball and Taylorville game resulted in a draw, Taylorville being very lucky to even up in the final minute of the game. For Blackball, Caldwell, McNicol and Swinlay were the pick, while Pickering, Russell, and Thomas were prominent for Taylorville. The teams were: —• Taylorville: Pickering, Glenn, Russell, Beaton, Rutherford, Rothera, Thomas, Menzies, Glenn, Tinning Tennant.

Blackball. — Thomson, Caldwell Rarity, McGougan, Smith, McNicol, Anderson, McNicol, Gray, Swinlay, Hampson.

Referee, Mr C. Quibell. Blackball kicked off against the sun and Pickering -was called on early to clear his goal. Taylorville were kept penned in their own half, Anderson and Swinlay having good shots at goal. At the other end Glenn headed narrowly over the bar. Weak finishing efforts by the Blackball forwards spoilt many promising movements. Glenn brought down Swinlay in the penalty area, but Swinlay sent the ball over the bar. Play went from end to end with neither side dangerous. Anderson made several runs on the wing for Blackball, but his centre kicks were never taken advantage of. Taylorville then broke away and Rarity conceded a corner, which was cleared, and half-time sounded with no score.

The second spell opened with the home tetam pressing, and the forwards were unlucky with their shooting, the cross-bar saving the visitors when their defence was well beaten. Glenn broke away, but Caldwell returned with a hefty kick and from a cross from Anderson, Swinlay opened the scoring with a fast rising ball,, which gave Pickering no chance. Blackball continued on the offensive until tlie closing stages, when the visiting forwards came away and Glenn scored from what seemed an offside position with the last kick of ue game.
