HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, June 14. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; present: the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. D. J. Evans, Jas. King, A. C. Armstrong, A. R. Elcock, Dr. Teichelmann, T. W. Duff and E. W. Heenan. Apologies were made for Crs Heinz and Turner.

The Secretary, British Empire Cancer Campaign Society, Christchurch, wrote intimating that the Minister of Health is recommending legislation during the coming session to validate grants made by local bodies to the Cancer Campaign Fund, and asking the Council for a donation towards the fund. —Resolved to vote £5 5/-. The Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, wrote intimating that payment to the Council of auctioneers’ fees up to May 22, 1930, amounting to £77, is being arranged through the Treasury.

The secretary, Arthur Pass National Park Board, C/o Lands Department, Christchurch, intimated that funds are required for development of the Park. Dr. Teichelmann, who is a member of the Park Council, asked that the Council make as liberal donation as possible. He was well aware of the stringent financial position, but thought the Council should vote something. Pie moved that the sum of £lO 10/- be voted. Cr. Evans supported on condition that the amount is not paid till the end of September. The Mayor said the Council could not afford the grant, and considered it useless expenditure. Cr Heenan concurred with the Mayor. The motion was carried.

J. J. Mclntosh wrote asking that the footpath along Gibson Quay between Sewell and Tancred Streets be kerbed with concrete. —Resolved to put the work on the list of works to be done. F. A. Ballinger, Secretary ot the Hokitika Poultry Society, wrote intimating that a large Poultry Show will be held in Hokitika in July, and that the South Island Poultry Association’s Conference also takes place here about November next, and asking for small donation towards fund. —Resolved that the Council had no funds. Ralph Mackley wrote asking for attention to footpath on the northern side of Hampden Street, between Sewell Street and the railway line. W. H. Steel, lessee of Municipal Reserve No. 533, Weld Street, wrote intimating (1) that he desires to install a household drainage system on the reserve and asking which drainage outlet he can use, and (2) application for street crossing fronting section. — The Public Works Committee to report. J. A. Cuttance wrote thanking Councol for having a street electric light erected at the corner of Weld and Davie Streets.

The secretary of the defunct Horticultural Society (D. J. Evans) wrote stating that the Society was beingwound up and that the property was being made over to the Hokitika Poultry Society. Accounts amounting to the sum of £196/9/8 were passed for payment.

The Town Clerk reported receipts amounting to £275/7/7 and payments £321/2/9. Debit £1023/10/7. The Abattoir’s Manager reported animals slaughtered during May, 24 cows, 17 heifers, 61 bullocks, 207 sheep, 75'. lambs. 8 pigs, 31 calves; condemned 1 cow, 1 bullock. Fees received £69/4/6. For similar period last year £7B/9/0. In the Overseer’s report it was stated that the depth of water in the reservoir had averaged 10 feet for the month. The Overseer also stated that the section of new pipeline at Lake Kanieri (about one mile six chains) was almost completed and that possibly on Wednesday next the connection would be made and the water turned o nthroiigh them. The Mayor reported on the amount of “Poppy” money available for the Council. It was resolved that the amount he subsidised as usual, and. that arrangements be made to have it spent as directed.
