Though the statement of the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) that the defence system is under review has been taken to mean that the compulsory military training scheme is to be abolished, there is no indication of that fact. To several people who have written to him congratulating him on the Government’s step the Minister of Defence (the Hon. I.T. G. Cobbe) has replied that no decision has been made and the matter is still being investigated. A report has been received from the General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces (Major-General R. Young) this repiesenting the opinion of the senior officers who met in Wellington to draft a report to the Government on tlw defence system, it j s understood that this report sets out the fact that the territorial system has proved of considerable value and that, with all factors taken into consideration, it is Hot aS expensive as other training systems in other parts of the world. °
