RUNANGA NOTES

[OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Mr R. Dane whilst following his employment at the Middle-brake mine Rewanui yesterday met with an accident which necessitated his removal by the ambulance. Messrs Bayne and Strongman visited the Liverpool mines on Monday and inspected the various sections. Misses Gladys Higson and Alice Radcliffe leave this week to take part, in the competitions being held in Hokitika.

The wedding took place in Wellington on Friday of Miss Tonge (Bolton. England), who arrived by the Mataroa on Thursday, to Mr T. Green, of Runanga. Mr ami Mrs Green arrived on the Coast by Saturday’s express. The Westmoreland and Cumberland Society held their fortnightly gathering in the Druids’ Hall on Saturday, and took the opportunity to present their former secretary, Mr J. Watson with a salad bowl and spoons on the occasion of his recent marriage. His wife was also a member of the Society. The bowling green has been closed for the season, and a “busy bee” got busy during the week-end and started top-dressing the green. The officials of this club have to be congratulated for the work carried on and the Runanga green is now equal to any in New Zealand Throughout the year the old time dances have been held in the Miners’ Hall and all profit has been devoted to the Australian miners’ fund. These dances are still being held and are largely attended. Soccer seems to have slipped back in this locality, as there is only one team in our midst. Two years, ago nine players out of a possible eleven were selected for one representative match.

The children’s fancy dress ball to be held this month is likely to be a great success as in past years. Great interest is to be taken in the dresses and judges this year will find it difficult to pick the winner. The billiard handicap will be brought to a close to-night when the final is played in the library. Messrs Drew and O’Neill are the finalists.
