OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT

During the . making of the all-talk-ing epic of the sea, “The Hurricane,” which is to be shown this evening and on Thursday, all the sailors and abie-bodied seamen were sea-sick, while the land-lubbers felt no illeffects from the ground swell: “The Hurricane” is a soul stirring drama set against an adventurous background of life before the mast in the days when men battled the elements for wealth, for love and for glory. That grand old actor, Hobart Bosworth portrays the role of “Hurricane”. He is ably supported by Johnnie Mack Brown, Leila Hyams and many others. Excellent supports. BLAKETOWN DANCE The big dance at Blaketown "was held last Monday night, when the second series of the Watch Competition was held. Eighty couples tripped the floor to the best of music supplied by McDonnell’s band. The winners for the Watch Competition were Misses Tomasi, Cressey, McGuire, Brown and Messrs Dimond, Jackson, McHugh and Aiderton. The third series will be held next Monday night.

COBDEN SOCIAL. The ladies’ social committee invite everybody to .the euchre and dance in the Cobden Gymnasium on Friday evening. Proceeds of this week’s entertainment go towards buying a gramophone for Cobden School. ST. JOHN’S FLOWER SHOW. The St. John’s Presbyterian Church annual Chrysanthemum Show will bo held to-morrow afternoon,- and promises, to be a successful function from every point of view. The fact that Runanga has had no show this year should increase the entries at St. John’s, while the continued fine weather has greatly assisted in the cultivation of many fine blooms locally. The usual stalls ami tearooms will be run in conjunction with the Show, which will be opened by Rev. J. Hayward, of Hokitika at 2.30 p.m. The function will not be continued in the evening.
