BLAKETOWN CI.UB

The Blaketown Club’s annual meeting was held yesterday in the Blaketown Hall, nearby fifty members being present. Mr. J. T. O’Donnell presided. The annual report was as follows: — The season ended 1929 has as far as the Club is concerned been easily the best one since its inauguration. A senior team was turned out for the first time, and although most of the players were the previous year’s juniors, they proved their worth as seniors by finishing second in the competition. This was rather a good showing for a first year senior team, and the captain and other players are to be congratulated on then- advancement and with some new blood that is now procurable they should make their 'presence felt on the playing field in the’ ensuing year. Tlie juniors were not so fortunate as the seniors, but this, of course, was expected, as most of our juniors were promoted to senior ranks, thus leaving the junior team very weak. Despite this, they managed to hold together well, and this fact alone is deserving of praise. However the 1930 season should see them back to fighting strength when they should again make their presence felt. The fourth graders, under the tuition of Mr. J. Stokes as coach, did exceedingly Well and a lot of the young players show good promise for the Club’s future. Let us keep the fourth graders going for they are the seniors of to-morrow and on whom the futiire of the Club depends. The social sid_e of the -Club has ’ not been neglected, and the Club, as the result of socials, etc:, raised- £29/8/5, which is very satisfactory, when it is taken into consideration that fifteen new jerseys were procured during the year? ana numerous items such as affiliation fees advertisements, presentations, benefits and condolences, etc., had to be paid for. A pleasing thing last season was the way members paid up then subs., for hardly a subscription was left outstanding, and this is one reason why the Club’s finance is showing such a good credit balance. We were exceedingly unfortunate in losing our esteemed President and Chairman, Mr. E. Clough, who filled the position veij ably for many years, and rendered yeoman service to our club. However, we wish him the best of luck m his new location. In conclusion, we wish to thank all the members and officials who worked so hard for the success of the Club and Rugby football, and wish the Club the best of luck in the coming season. Officers elected for the coming season are as follow: —Patron,/Mi. G. R. Harker; President, Mr. A. Addison; Vice-Presidents, the same as last year, with the addition of Messrs D. Wright, N. V. Hannam, junr., Selection Committees: Senior: Messrs F. McEnaney, T. O’Donnell, and W. Hannam, senr.; junior committee: Mr. McGrath and the captain; Coach, Mr. T. O’Donnell; Custodian, Mr. F. McEnaney; Delegates to Rugby Union, Messrs T. O’Donnell and W. Hannam (senior). The delegates, were instructed to vote against the proposal that a senior club be represented by only one delegate. Mr. R. Neale was appointed secretary and treasurer vice Mr. F. Sadler, who intimated that he would shortly be transferred to Christchurch. On Mr. W. Hannam’s motion, it was decided to record on the minutes the Club’s appreciation of Mr. Sadler’s services.

It was decided to nominate senior, junior, and fourth grade competition teams, and a fifth-grade team, if possible. Rimmer, Bell, Dixon, Garrett, Dunshea, Frame, Collins, Clarke, Blacktopp, Wraight and Bouterey. It was decided to apply for the use of the Star Hall for one practice night a week, and to ask the secretary of the Rugby Union to endeavour to arrange a senior and junior game on Victoria Park on Saturday. The proceeds of the game will be given to the Cancer Campaign Fund. It was arranged to combine weekly practice and meeting nights.
