RUNANGA NOTES

[OVE OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Mr J J- Moore, an official of the Q ta te. Mines Engineering Department, Rewanui, is an inmate of the. Grey Hospital. • The bicycle race was not held yesterday, owing to the injury received bv Mr W. Robson, handicapper, at. the mine on Thursday. Hunter and party have started production at their new co-operative mine, which is situated between the two tunnels on the Rewanui line. The Runanga Tennis Club held their annual ball in the Miners’ Hall on Friday evening. An energetic ladies committee provided a first-class supper steel’s orchestra supplied the, music, and the floor was in good condition for dancing. There was a large number of visitors present. Residents had a large variety of gatherings to whet their appetites with during the week-end. The kickoff was the miners’ stop-work meeting on Friday morning. The Tennis Ball on Friday night was followed by the sports in the Domain on Saturday, also the Old Timers’ Dance and the gathering of the Caledonian Society at night. Yesterday brought a general meeting to hear Dr Meade’s appeal against the decision of the Committee. All these gatherings terminated in a happy spirit, and it is to be hoped that there will be as good an ending to the present Dobson dispute. An incident happened at the sports on Saturday, which goes to show how the handicappers have to keep wide awake for would-be entrants. One presented himself under the name of “Navako.” The handicapper, taking no chances with him, placed him two behind scratch. However, “Navako” played so well that he reached the final, where he met another Tartanite,' and he was thoroughly subdued, as the scores read fifteen to none. When the shaking of hands took place, one was heard to remark, “Due ye ken thats oor Gibbie frae Blackball?” The bzowling season is drawing to a close. Interest, however, >is very keen for the Rae Buttons. Kroening and Swallow, who had beaten the opposition a number of times during the last few weeks, met their Waterloo from Key and Warburton, when the score was 18 to 11. The consistent play of the lead was a marked feature of the winners’ display throughout the game. The holders of the Mclntosh Badges are Johnson, King, Kroening and Chambers.

The meeting convened by the Medical Society to hear Dr Meade’s appeal regarding his dismissal took place in the Miners’ Flail yesterday, when close on 350 were present. The case was discussed for nearly two hours and ahalf. The following motion was placed before the meeting:—“That the doctor’s appeal be upheld, and that the advertisements for another doctor be withdrawn from the papers immediately.” The voting resulted in an overwhelmiung majority for the motion, which means that Dr Meade will not need to hand in his resignation, as de- - manded by the Committee. The Domain Board have now got the Domain in good order, and they expect that al sports bodies will avail themselves of the opportunity to play their games there during the winter.
