IRISH FREE STATE
MINISTRY’S RESIGNATION. [BY CABLE PRESS ASSN. COPYRIGHT.] DUBLIN, March 28. Tho Irish Free State Government was defeated on a Bill for extending the old age pensions, which was introduced by the De Valera Party. The Bill was opposed by the Government on the grounds that it would involve an extra cost of from £250,000 to £300,000 yearly. Tho Bill was supported by the Labour Party and by sopie of the Independents. The Dail Eireann has adjourned until next Wednesday, when it will proceed with the election of the new President. Mr. O’Kelly who acts as the Leader of Mr. De Valera’s Party in the absence of Mr. De Valera, said that his Party was prepared to nominate Mr De Valera as President.
The general belief in Dublin is that Mr. De Valera will be defeated, and that Mr. Cosgrave will be re-elected. Mr. Cosgrave was elected to the Presidency >of the Free State in 1922, and was re-elected in 1927. The Free State Labour Party is prejudicing De Valera’s chances of election, by announcing a decision to propose that their own leader, Mr O’Connell, should succeed Mr Cosgrave.
