RUNANGA SPORTS

SUCCESSFUL MEETING. [our own correspondent.] The Silver Jubilee meeting of the Runanga Sports Club was held at the Domain on Saturday, when an excel-! lent programme of events was decided. A large number of officials had everything in good order. Every event was run oil’ like clockwork and the officials are to be congratulated on the manner in which the sports were conducted throughout. The handicapping of the running and chopping left little to be desired, the spectators being treated to close finishes in every event. Fifteen entrants faced the starter in the 100 yards, which was ultimately won by Wilson, who scraped home by inches from O’Connell. Seven-

teen runners took part in the 120 yards, Gordon winning in fine style in 12 l-ssecs. Thirty-four and twentyfour starters participated in the underhand and upright chops respectively, whilst there were twenty-four starters for the maiden. Jackson won the Maiden and the 14-inch Underhand, thus collecting a £4B dividend for the day. Gugich won the upright in the splendid time of 4Ssecs. Out of the twelve entrants for the double-handed saw, two cuts, only six faced the starter, and’ the event was won by Gillman Bros. The sports for children were also well conducted, and every child competing received a prize. * Mr It. McTaggart (Mayor) at the conclusion of the big chop, took the opportunity to present the two axes donated by Mr Burns and the Plumb Axe Company respectively to the winners of both chops, Mr Jackson re-|

ceiving both. Mr McTaggart thanked the public for such a large attendance, nearly 1000 being present. He said| that the sports had been run on highly successful lines. It was the intention of the Club to endeavour to have the world’s championship held at Runanga next year when the prize money for the big chop would be £lOO for the winner. The Club will also- try to give more money for the running events. > The bicycle race was up to standard.

th© first four . being within a length of one another at the finish. Two quoiting tournaments were also held, the first being a ten yards Geordie style, and the second being a fifteen yards handicap Scottish style, which were conducted in a thorough manner throughout.
