REEFTON NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, March 31. On Friday evening the members of Knox Church congregation assembled in St. Stephen’s Church Sunday schoolroom to bid good-bye to Rev. S. J. and Mrs Webb, who have been transferred to Springburn. Mr. H. Campbell presided and apologised for the absence of Mr. I. Patterson and others who were unable to attend. During the evening solos were rendered by MesdamdsDay and Campbell, Misses Hutton and Patterson; dilet by Mr. and Mrs H. Campbell, and recitations by Rev. T. W. Parsons, Misses May Wood, B. Day and Freda Patterson. Competitions engaged in were won by Mesdames Russell and Slobie. Before the supper adjournment, Mr. Campbell on behalf of the congregation’ expressed the regret of the gathering present at the departure of Mr. and Mrs Webb from their midst, and pre-sented-Mr. Webb with a token of their regard, and Mrs Webb a handsome cake tray and table centre, and expressed the hope that the change would be beneficial to Mrs Webb’s health and wished them both success and prosperity. Rev. T. W. Parsons, on behalf of Wesley Church, wished the departing guests good speed and success in their new home. Mr. Webb thanked them all for their kindness. A dainty supper was served. Auld Laing Syne was -sung before the gathering dispersed. On Sunday Rev. S. J. Webb officiated at Knox Church and preached his farewell sermon. Mr. Webb left for Springburn per car to-day, and Mrs Webb leaves by to-morrow’s train for Springburn.

Mr. L. W. Stevens, Director of the Reefton School of Mines, was a visitor to Greymouth on. Saturday with a number of candidates for gas testing in coal mines, where, an examination took place on that subject on Saturday.

Messrs Dalton and Gillespie of Meth ven were visitors to Three Channel Flat during last week and with Mr Jno. .L. Sullivan, inspected the earthquake area, up to and beyond Lyell. Captl McGregor, with Mr. Bert Spiers as a passenger in the Moth plane which recently visited Reefton, journeyed over Maruia Springs, Cuunibal Gorge, and Lewis Pass, en route from Murchison to Christchurch. The journey took 1 3 hours. Capt. McGregor considered it the finest aerial journey he had made to date, and stated that they had passed over some vety rough country with no chance of landing. Mrs C. J. Blackmore, who has been on a health visit to Maruia Springs, returned home yesterday, much improved for her visit to the Springs. Golden Point Colliery has again entered the ranks of coal producers and last week two trucks of 8 tons each, went forward to Christchurch.
